I know this debate has been beaten to death, but can someone who has both lenses tell me which one is more compact? The 35mm pre-asph Summicron or the Summilux?
The pre-ASPH Summicron/Summilux are basically the same size in use. The Summilux is a bit heavier which in a compact lens like this close to the camera mount doesn't feel like much.
The newer squared hood for the 4th version Summicron does a great job, and does give a slightly more compact feel over-all. The Summicron (4th version again) 39mm filters vs series 7 with the drop-in hood of the Summilux or 2nd/3rd version Summicron (no filter threads). The Summicron does focus to .7m which besides the speed factor is the only other physical element you may find important.
The 35mm pre-asph lux is surprisingly heavy for it's diminutive size, the actual size differs very little from the cron's particularly the 1st and last, nor indeed from the Summaron.
