I prefer to shoot with my M9, but I'll hit the streets with my DSLR or point and shoot. Whatever I'm in the mood for. The iPhone 6 makes a decent backup camera too!

I shot with all manual film SLRs for most of my life. I would use a wide angle lens, no longer than 28mm in the 135 format, set it at F5.6 or F8 and the hyperfocal distance, and not worry about focusing at all, but the new mirrorless cameras, at least the ones with articulating LCDs and touch screens, and their implementation of modern features such as focus-tracking and touch-focusing, can make AF work really well in the street. And, in terms of ISO, the new digital gizmos surpass old Tri-X 400 by several stops.

I voted other for mirrorless. I've owned an M8 but in the end couldn't live with the ISO quality, although I liked the whole Leica gestalt.

A very good rangefinder camera for street photography nowadays is the Contax I from 1932.

daily setup.. for almost anything, I always bring one M with 35mm and TLR rolleiflex 3.5 in my retro5

Lately I been using a Canon L1 with a J-3 lens, but normally it is the Kiev 4 with the J8M or an f1.5 Sonnar lens.

I've been using m4/3 cameras since they first appeared. From my first Lumix GF-1 right up to my Lumix GX-7, and a few Olympus bodies here and there. I have superb lenses for the cameras and in my mind, this mirrorless system is ideal for street shooting. I would not change a thing.

Definitely it would be a rangefinder for quick skillful work.

I have shot street with so many different cameras over the years, Blads, SLRs, DSLRs and the now i found to be the best tool for me and the speed I work at is the MM. Because of it's really good high ISO performance (unlike the M8) I can shoot at high shutter speeds and also have good DoF (f/8 and F/11 at 1/500-1/2000) so the use of DoF scales, hyper focus and fast shutter speeds I can just see and shoot. I found auto focus to not be fast enough. No auto focus is faster than being pre focused.
You all pretty know what my work looks like so I will not repost stuff here. But those that know my work understand it's about the visual relationships that happen in fractions of seconds and for that there is nothing better than a true rangefinder for me. And the fact I see in B&W and at a 35mm FoV the MM and a 35mm lens are the tools that are right for me on the street.

Yes I have within the last year completely switched to Leica M. Even for my pro commercial/advertising work. No REGRETS. Picked up an M 262 and a very gently used M-E and dumped all of my Canon gear. Yep even my 200 2L, 24L, 35L and 85L and don't miss it even a little.
