Which kind of camera you use for street photography?

Lately I’ve only been photographing at night and I’m doing it without a tripod. I’ve been using the Fujifilm X-H1 and 35mm 1.4/56mm 1.2 with IBIS.

I voted RF, because it's what I've used the most lately - Bessa-T. I also use a compact, my trusty Ricoh GR III. In the past I've used M4/3 mirrorless a lot, often with the flip LCD, but my taste has kind of moved away from that kind of shooting. Both the Bessa-T and the GR are non-threatening, the former because it's such a classy, retro and obviously film camera that it looks like I can't possibly be doing anything serious. The latter being so small it looks like a snapshot camera, and is wide enough that I don't always point it right at a subject.

A GAF L-ES with a 35mm SMC f3.5 Takumar. It's an odd combo, but the L-ES gives me auto exposure with any single pin M42 lens. Also quieter than I would have thought.

My favorite camera for street photography is a Pentax 6x7 with 55mm f/4.0 lens. The lens is perfectly usable wide open and, coupled with 400 ISO film, makes a great street machine. I avoid photographing strangers as much as possible, but I do take group pictures of friends and relatives in locations and situations typical of street photography. Because the pictures are planned and the subjects know what I am doing I can afford to take my time. I typically use Tri-X in a Barnack Leica, developed in Rodinal.

Groups are taboo where I'm for second year. I went with M4-2 to look at strangers around popular recreational spot on this Friday (just beside my work). I just can't point camera on strangers without been in crowd anymore...
Until Ccrap is over any camera will do on empty streets... IMO. I walk with 5D MKII and L zoom just as with E-PL1 and tiny lens. No difference how to photograph streets...

I'm in rotation between the GR III, Fuji X100F, or XT-3 with 27 2.8. Each has their own strengths, right? Just depends on how much I want to carry, and if I think I need to be stealthy for some reason.

I don't really like the latest iteration of the Ricoh GR for a number of reasons (the latest GRIII is about to come to the end of its life for me - earlier than what it did with the GRII) however, it remains king for street photography and particularly capturing the unposed moment. And whilst the rendering of the III for me is not on par with the II, its extra resolution does tend to 'save' a lot of instantaneously shot pictures.

With big number on vaccinated GTA street life is returning. At the same time I got GRD III and GRD original to practice. Huge thing is articulation by holding it in hand. Very different from the neck strap. Only screen is very limiting under the bright light. No framing rather than just pointing it to the right direction. This is where MPs are handy.

Canon 5D MKII makes people alert from the distance. I see how they becomes alerted with my presence.
With GRD cameras I get close, start conversation and take picture without any difficulties.
With M-E on the neck strap I see different reaction comparing to 5D MKII. People are aware, but much less alert. Quick framing with M OVF is way better than framing with RP EVF.

GRD on wrist strap with OVF attached should allow both. Pointing to direction or framing with OVF. Due to small sensor and wide angle I don't miss focus even with AF instead of snap.

It has been a few years and I have become a GR convert!! I still have my X100F (grazie di cuore, Pepi!), but I am with the GR III very much. With 21mm converter it is marvelous!

Sold this and bought a GFX-50R… I’ll use it as well as my usual Fujis. The new Ricoh GRIIIx looks like it’ll round out my gear and my street needs. If I feel like using film, I have a Bessa R2 with 35mm Color-Skopar.
