Which Lens CANNOT be on m8?

Dual range can only be mounted in close-focus range.
Have you actually mounted the Dual-Range Summicron on your M8? The manual states that it and the 9cm F4 collapsible cannot be mounted at all. One RFF member stated that this was true in their experience, that the mechanism hung-up.
I would be interested in seeing a picture of it mounted on the M8. I also seem to recall there being two versions of the DR Summicron- I wonder if some will mount and others cannot be mounted.

I remember trying, and failing, to mount a DR summicron on one of my M8s, but that was a couple years ago. I only remember that something on the lens body kept it from fitting in place.

I have a 90/4 collaspible Elmar. It mounts fine and works great on the M8. Just don't collaspe it!
I HAVE GOT TO TRY THAT!!!
My Collapsible 9cm F4 Elmar is a favorite. Even not collapsed.

It's a pretty heavy lens compared to my Elmar-C, which I love. Both produce great files!

My DR hangs up, and it is not the plastic tab, which I have heard is an issue with some of the other later M's.
Shame, as I had read in Roger's Shutterbug article that he was using this lens.
Some said it could be used in one mode or the other, it is not my experience that this is the case.
I did have my CV 35mm 1.2 modified and it works fine.
At the local Leica wing ding, they would not attempt to mount the 12mm CV, and the factory guys on the phone would not comment on any non Leica glass fitting on any of the Leica products.
Of course, it works fine, as many here know.
Regards, John

I know some people that use the 21/3.4 Super Angulon as well. Leica recommends it not being used on the M8. I was told that it hits the shutter and not to mount it. It also covers the meter cell. I sold mime and now regret it! It works on the M8. It does not hit the shutter curtain. One just has to compensate for the meter reading or go manual.

The Summicron DR will not mount on the M8 at all. Any DR that is mounted to the M8 has been vandalized by having the close focus portion of its flange filed or ground down.
I sold my DR because it was impossible to mount on my M8 and at the time it didn't look like I'd be getting a film M. Of course, now I have an M2 and am regretting that sale.

I use the 90 Elmar col. on my M8 with no problem. It will collapse, just not completly. I will post some pics later this morning when I get up.

One of my favorites also, even mostly collapsed.

The Dual Range Summicron CAN indeed be mounted on every M8. ONLY in close focus mode though. You must pull the helical over to close focus range then mount the lens. It's the close-focus cam on the back of the helical which prevents mounting the lens in normal (infinity-1m) range. The shelf where the meter cell sits is the issue.
I use my M8 with DR Summicron in this way just fine. Mount it in close focus range then put the eyes on & go. Everything focuses perfectly and the lens is stellar when used in this way.
DO NOT attempt to roll the DR focusing ring over to normal range then focus it, you'll pull the front of the M8 off if you put enough effort into it (and this is a considerable amount of effort.)
I hate the idea of people grinding down the close focus cams on the DR when all they need to do is find a chrome rigid Summicron focusing unit and transfer the optical head (which is removable for visoflex use) and can be transferred between DR and rigid just fine. Leica designed them this way. The only thing to watch for is that the nominal focal length of the DR is 51.9mm so you must find the 1st gen rigid focusing unit for the transfer to be right. The later rigid Summicrons are mostly 51.6mm. If you have a "beater" late rigid focusing unit and don't mind permanently "mis-adjusting" it, you can have it adjusted to focus properly with the DR optical unit.
Just stop cutting up Dual Range Summicron focusing cams!

There is no reason to do that, however. The optical cell is identical. The myth that Leica "specially selected" them is just thst : a myth. Just buy a rigid Summicron and use the DR ones for film.

Or just use the DR for the close-up work that it is so good at doing.

Here you go

I had a lot of editing to do tonight but did get around to shooting this in the bathroom.
The small plastic tab on the back of the "eyes" for my lens fell off in Iraq somewhere & I'm not going back to find it. the purpose it serves is only to guard the earlier M cameras from scratching anyways. The lens flange of the M8 is >2mm farther out from the body than an old M so this risk is further mitigated.
Have fun with your Dual Range!

What is this lens of which you speak? My 35/1.2 works fine and I wasn’t aware of any major revisions....

I don't know who told you that, as Leica mentions that they do not recommend it because it meters incorrectly, as you found.I know some people that use the 21/3.4 Super Angulon as well. Film, the next evolution.
I tried a lens out of my glasses but it didn't work, (anti-scratch coating and all that).
