which meter on m-3

am thinking of bidding on a mr meter for my m-3. does anyone know if this works ok... or is it better to get the mr4 (button on the top instead of the side and i think slightly smaller)

Either one will work on the M3. The MR-4 was developed for the M4 because the wind knob wouldn't clear the pushbutton of the MR.

have you looked at/considered the cv clip-on meter?

I use the VC Meter II from Voigtländer. It is less bulky than the Leica meters and does not scratch the top plate.

I used to use the little clip-on CV meter, which was a gem, on my M3. Very accurate and small. Many times, though, I just kept it in my pocket and pointed it at the scene to take a reading. After a while, I used basically used the meter just to as a backup to check the light and relied primarily on the sunny sixteen method. Do it for a while and you'll amaze yourself at how accurate you become at guaging the light. Do you shoot mostly color or black and white? If you shoot slides stick with the meter. If you shoot black and white try the sunny sixteen method and use the meter as a backup.

thanks...i shoot black and white and color neg film... i guess it will be a good education to see how well i can do without relying solely on a meter... back to basics... 🙂

Black and white as well as color negative films have a great deal of exposure latitude, as you probabaly already know. I'm not suggesting you accept sloppy exposures but you do have more room for mistakes with negative films. With slide film, I'd use the meter all the time. Anyway, the M3 is a fun camera to use and it can be even more intuitive to shoot with the less you have to fiddle around with. Good shooting...
