This is Doreen and Jack.

She's eighty two and currently undergoing chemotherapy and may or may not recover. Jack's eighty seven and as deaf as a post ... if Doreen doesn't make it I suspect he'll fade pretty quickly because Doreen truly is his sun and his moon!

I took these pics of them on new years day at a bash they put on every year for their nearest and dearest friends and Carol (the GF) and I would like to print one, frame it and give it to them as a token of our affection for a wonderful couple who may not be around much longer.

But I'm buggered if I can decide which of the two I like better and which is actually a better pic ... please take it out of my hands and tick the appropriate box! :eek: :)

Definitely he second one. They're both nice, but the second one hangs together better, they are more unified as a couple, and it's warmer, emotionally.

NIce photos, and best wishes for Doreen...
 
yep the second one is the stronger pic, but sadly the overall composition is better in the first one

If it were mine I’d be agonising about weather to crop the second shot square and have a much better pic .. and no principals

PS I hope she comes through OK

First I saw the first one and I liked it. Then I saw the second pic, and I quickly felt "this is the one." The first one is also very very nice indeed, but their attentions and the point of smile/laugh is towards outside of the frame. The second one, the emotions are well contained within the frame with her natural beauty and his gentle look to his wife. Another vote for #2.

Yep ... you've summed it up perfectly Stewart!

Composition verses content and yes I have agonised about cropping the second image. :p
 
I personally prefer the second photo (crop or uncropped).
......... he is looking at her and she is looking at you. A much more engaging pic IMHO.

I went through the same thing last summer, composition won out in the end.

I printed both and put them on the studio wall for a few days
 
Keith, no. 2 for me. Doreen's eyes are the key and as the poet said, the eyes are the windows to the soul.

Nice shots both. Congratulations.

Keith, for me also #2. Even without your background commentary #2, by their expressions suggests a shared intimacy over a lifetime together.
 
I think the second is a much stronger photograph, but if I were one of the people in the photo I think I would rather have the first.

Yep, there is that. Although him looking at her is sweet, she does look sad. In the misfortunate event she does not make it, that might cause him more sadness to look at. I voted for number 1.

Also, even though they are looking out of the frame, they are both doing is so it is a match. Also, they both seem very happy at something. Hopefully a better memory.

They are in my prayers.
