which would you choose? M3 or...

I'm new to Leicas, but I can't see why you'd let go of the M3 for an M6 unless you wanted to limit yourself to one body and really needed an inboard meter. I bought an M6 last year but am thinking now of selling it and just putting a VC II on my M4. That way I can shoot the M4 all the time, yum.

With an M3 you are limited to 50, 90, and 135 framelines unless you use an external finder or a lens with goggles. I've only had my M3 a few weeks, but every day I question whether I'm better off just getting a body that has framelines for my favorite focal length (35).

Depends partly on what your favorite lens is.
As much as I love my M3 I'm not sure it would be 'the' Leica M for me if I was into shooting with 28 or 35mm lenses. Since I am a huge fan of the 50mm the M3 was a perfect fit for my need.

M6. None of the advantages of the M3 outweights a built-in meter in my opinion. In particular if you shoot slides.

Richard is right in that you want to consider your favorite focal length. I just enjoy wide-angles and use my 'cron 50 very infrequently with my M6s, but with the M3... I don't use any other lens.

Again, it's not my every day camera either. Just don't sell your M3, Brett, and start saving for the M6 of your dreams. :)

What's your favourite lens Brett? If its a 50 and you fancy using a 35 every now and then consider a 0.85 mag M6. I have a 0.85 mag M and the 35mm lens is totally usable on it (I don't wear glasses) and 50 is out of this world. :D

I used my M3 with a Canon 35mm f:1.8 and SBLOO 35mm Brite-Line finder for 10 years before my M4 and 35mm Lux was aquired in 1968. The finder was great for spot news photography; I still use the finder on my M6 and .85 M6TTL on occasion to get the old feel back.
P.S. I still have my M3 and Black Paint M4...
