Perhaps a Kantian view, but my motives are less technical and more selfish. I use photography to discover something about the world around me--other faces, other minds, and thus, perhaps, something about myself.

That's the best I can do also.
We photograph our inner desires, or tragedies, our longing for beauty outside of our-self. We want OUR images to say WHO we are, WHAT we think, HOW we feel, OUR internal emotions displayed proudly for all to see.
Some have great compassion for others in need, and photograph that, others have to show tragedy (Fires, earthquakes, etc).. they follow that in their photography, so others can have compassion possibly. Some photograph only beauty to share with the world, if just for a moment to give that viewer a second or 2 peace.
We may not change the world, but, for a moment, we can have an effect on the viewer who will leave with a message we hope, that may help them along THAT day.

History is what you see, and what you hear. All the rest is someone else's opinions and biases.
I wouldn't get too caught up w/ the how and why part, as I don't think that goes anywhere. If you enjoy it (whatever "it" is), and it doesn't hurt anyone else, that's reason enough.
Ranchu said it best. It's like Zen, which is a totally unintellectual practice, but attracts the most intellectual people you would ever want to meet. Once our monkey-mind calms down from all the sureness, the scheming and planning, and the fears, we just get on w/ things as they are.
