Months ago there was this thread:

and I would like to ask what those of you who considered to buy the "baby-Oly" think about it now.
Do you have one ? Are you contend ?

I have a 410. I love it. It does all that I want a DSLR to do. The kit lenses are surprisingly good performers, and incredibly light, but the pro-spec lenses are worth the money. If I had more call for a DSLR I would probably have a 520, but I cannot justify the additional expense. 95% or more of my photos are taken with Leica rangefinders; in fact, thinking about it, the last time I used my 410 was in February!

With the death of my LC1 I do need a new higher-quality-than-compact digital camera. I have a big trip coming up which will take me to the Galapagos Islands so I will need a good telephoto for the wildlife. I'm thinking of purchasing the 420 with the pancake lens and then renting the Olympus 50-200 f2.8-3.5 for the trip, so I look forward to anyone's opinions on this camera as well!

If Oly managed to put IS inside a body that size, I'll probably finally be able to give up my E-300 with gladness. That, and a prime 35mm/2 (film equal, 17mm in 4/3rd-speak).
Come on, Oly!
Come on, Oly!

I think I'll pick up a 420 tomorrow so I'll get back to you on it...
I've been using the E-3 with the old 21/2 Zuiko for nearly everything - pretty much a 40/2 on 4/3rds and very versatile and easy to use.

It's a good forum, Thomas, even though its emphasis on the newest equipment rather leaves out people like me with my old E-300.
Will, the nearest 4/3 lens to what you want is the Panasonic/Leica 25 mm. No wider lens of fixed focus seems to be on the cards.

You already have an E3 and you're picking up 420? Hmmm ...
I wish I can work it in the budget to get the E3, big, bright viewfinder is good with manual lenses.

You and I are clutching to our old and plain E-300
It's fun to be the laggard, though, and let the "abundantly-blessed" blaze the path to get the gear prices falling.

It is excellent with manual lenses. With the 21/2 it makes a heavy handful, and a strange replacement for an M6 but it really works. And the IS is invaluable.
The 410 and 25/2.8 make a very small light auto-focus alternative, but I get frustrated with the slightly inferior sensor hence the 420...
It all makes sense, honest...

Though its no rangefinder camera either - I use a Canon EOS350D for digital streetwork from time to time. Its not that much taller than the Oly and it lets adapt a wider range of manual lenses.

Apparently the E3 must be somewhat heavier...
Apparently the E3 must be somewhat heavier...
I just bought a like NIB e510 from a fellow who bought it as a backup for a new E3. He sold the E3 because it was much heavier than he anticipated, in actual use. So, did not need the e510. ???
Also, I am deliberating on whether to get rid of my e300. It's been a good camera, and researching the market, I'd be lucky to get $175 for the body and/or $225 body/14-54 lens. At that recovery, it seems like it would be a good backup for my new e510. However, since the eVolts just do not break, that's not very wise methinks. Have had a bunch of Oly's over the years, and quite a few of the small digitals, plus the e300 over two years now. Never a broken camera in the bunch.

I don't know if Canon EOS mount is more friendlier to manual lenses than 4/3rd. How so?

Man, I'm in the same exact situation, I want the E3 so badly. But good ol' E300 just keep ticking, and when used with fast and wide Zuiko or Zeiss lenses, the results are just unbelievable. Keeping on using it is really the best course of action.

First there are more lens-adapters available for xxx>Canon EF than xxx> Olympus/Fourthirds.
The second point, for me most essential, is the bigger sensor in Canons cheap DSLRs. A crop of 1,6 lets use me a lens much nearer its original focal length than a crop of 2,0. Its a difference if you use just a half of the lense in the center or nearly 2/3 of its glass.
And there is an option in the Canon-System to upgrade to a 24x36mm sensor which Olympus not has.

I am thinking about keeping the e300 and just selling the vertical grip (largely unused) that allows the two battery configuration.
Can you tell me what prime Zuiko lenses you are using on the e300 body (or Zeiss) for fast and wide??? Thanx
