Who has it! 28 Summaron-M

Very hard to make this lens flare. This is almost straight into the sun. Occasionally I get a little red arc lower left of the image in colour. The lens is deep set so I don't use a filter and I don't bother with the hood except in rain, and even then it offers little.

It seemed on first hearing of this lens that it might be only a bit better than the strange Thambar revival. No comparison. This lens is plenty sharp. For me it's the compactness.

I went for a walk this morning and it was very cold. I decided I'd stop for a coffee but was worried about condensation in the cafe. So I put the camera under my coat a few hundred metres short of the cafe. I could fit the M9-P and lens with cap around my neck and under my ribs, under my coat, buttoned, and was not cramped at all.

It is has hardly been off the camera since I bought it.

EDIT: And that’s the cafe above.

What Richard says, compactness and light rendering make this lens special.
On my M10 since I bought it. I'll try it with film on the M7 one day or the other 🙂

This was shot through a slightly tinted glass wall in Lugano LAC museum, visiting the Picasso's exhibition.

So much I like to shoot the Summaron full open I'm experiencing now to use it at F 11 (bright sun time!). It has in my opinion a very different character...or is it just my impression?

One more with the Summaron stopped down.

Shot at 400 iso, not sure why! Probably came out from indoor and forgot to change it, sometimes it happens!
PS: this is the top of the Milan Dom!

Memories of our visit to Lugano!

Some really nice images presented here.

For Robert I think with the high ISO performance of a M-10 dealing with the limitation of F5.6 is moot.

Understand that I own a black Canon 28/3.5 and basically I use this as my pancake 28 that I set at F5.6. On this lens the distance scale is in feet only. If I did not already own this Canon 28 I would be seriously interested in the 28 Summaron.

Know that I own a 28 Cron and the rare scalloped metal hood that fits the 28 Cron and 35 Lux ASPH Pre-FLE.

BTW the images presented here have a similar retro look to my Canon at F5.6.

Cal you are correct, exposure is not a problem with this lens on the M10.
Now I have the lens on the M7 with a 100 iso B&W film...let's see what will come out 🙂 need some time to shoot, develop and scan...

Robert,

Thanks for the confirmation. The M10 with a 28 Summaron is a hot rig.

Although I own a 28 Cron, I found that 95%- 98% of the time I used it stopped down to F5.6.

I'm not a 28mm fan, but honestly from what I see here I don't think that this lens beats the Color Skopar 28mm f/3.5. I love the shots, but not the way this lens performs. Not really sharp and an uneven illumination.

Erik.

Erik,

The Color Skopar has a more modern rendering for sure.

My old black Canon 28/3.5 also sufferes from light fall off and is soft in the corners. Definitely not a modern rendering and kinda romantic.

For a modern 28 rendering I have the 28 Cron ASPH.

I find this lens interesting when I shoot wide open but sometimes I shoot it at smaller aperture.
This is a shot I took when waiting for Raid and his daughters in Milan, shot probably at F11.
I'm not into street photography but sometimes I take a photo...
