For several weeks/months I've been investigating 35mm Summicrons. I was convinced that I wanted one. No, had to have one. To complete my Leica 35-50-90 trio.

NOT! 🙂

I think my little, CLA'd this week, hooded, capped, findered, cased, paid for and loved Canon 35mm f:2.8 lens is just fine for my needs.

What say ye all?

"Who needs a 35mm Summicron?" The people who shoot with it for a living.

The Canon 35mm f/2.8 provides great images.

"Who needs a Canon 35mm f/2.8?" would ask those who own the CV 35 f/2.5 Color-Skopar. Or the Jupiter-12. Or the Summaron f/2.8 or....

Oh, who needs anything?

As long as you like it, that's what matters.

Anyone who needs f2 and has a bunch of $. For me, I can get by with a J12, a Summaron, and a Canon 35 f2.8 in ltm. In Kiev/Contax mount I've got a couple of J12's, chrome and black.

hard to tell

hard to tell

from web pics, but looks very good, but so do those elmarit 90 pics of machinery!!

My trio is 21/35/90. When that was all I had, my 'cron got a LOT of use. I love fast and could not live without the option. When I look back at times where flash was not an option, the speed allowed me to get some shots that I would not have. Other times, when I was using an 2.8 lens, I might shoot four different frames to help make sure I got a good one. I hate doing that, I'm a one frame, one picture sort of guy.

We are luck because we have options that can extend our reach, allow us to extend our skills and view. Each lens is different. Is it a 'cron? What about a Nokton (35/1.2 or 40/1.4)? Perhaps a Nikkor 35/1.8? What about the new ZI Biogon 35/2? Your Canon 35/2.8 might be you. Look to you and expand yourself, not the tools without hitting a wall that you can not clear with your current kit.

Anyone who has the money and (in case of the ASPH. 2/35) needs a lens which can deal with strong backlight (the weakest point of the 2.8/35 Canon). Otherwise it's a very nice lens and, as you show us, sharp enough...

cheers Frank

I got a Summicron 35/2 with my M3 when I bought it many years ago, and all my other 35mm lenses have been secondary to me. I just sold a beautiful Canon 35mm/2.8, but I have the Canon 35mm/1.8 which is great for travel.

As Gabriel said above, to each his own. I like this and you like that and she likes the other one ....

Although i really like my Canon 35/2,8 it is no substitute for the cron asph.
It is an old style lens .. rendering old style images .....it is very different in character from a modern cron.. wonderful in what it does but no substitute!

I may not need a Summicron...

I may not need a Summicron...

...but I can't seem to get away from the thought of owning one. 😉

Ampguy-you may get your wish.

Anybody need/want/must have a really nice Canon VI-T body or two? With a Canon clip on light meter?

Stay tuned. Film at 11.

'Need' is such an overused word ... I prefer 'want' 😉

Looks like I got a fake 2nd chance offer on a 35mm Summicron. False alarm. I'm keeping everything for the time being.

Sorry for the hysteria.

OK, no prob.

Nothing to add to this 😉
Oh yes, one more word: nice pic, nice lens.

go for it. whatever works for you. bottomline tho is that the Leica is industrial strength and many will pony up for this dependability.

The best lens, as they say, is the lens on your camera. Mine is a 35mm Lux/Asph.

Best - P
