who owns a recent production zeiss ikon here?

#47! Well, actually it's on it's way... I ordered the ZI body and a 25mm Biogon from Germany. I should have them in 1-2 weeks. It's a LE body, but I don't know about the serial (don't care). The body is a Photokina sample, throughly checked and with warranty. I just can't wait!

#48.

Awaiting the lab results from my first couple of excursions with my ZI and 50mm Planar. These are some beautiful instruments.

The 25 or the 28 (or the 21!)

Silver with the 28 mm. Still lusting in my heart for the 25/2.8.

Charlie

I just read this whole thread, and I see that Charlie you did get the 25 that you wanted.

I am about to place an order for a ZI and I was going to get the 28 mainly because of the match to the finder. So I wanted to ask, now that you have both lenses, if you let's say... had to go on a month-long trip to "wherever" and could only bring one lens... (the 25 or 28), which would you take??????

I do already have the 25/2.8 in theory, but it's a ZF so in a way it doesn't count. But it does count. Does it count?

BLK body and SLVR lens...

...also after reading... I'm considering getting a Silver lens for a Black body. Didn't someone mention that? Do you have a shot of that setup??? I'd love to see it.

I've become a bigger fan of the 28. It's smaller and I just like that perspective better, probably because I used it a lot back when I was shooting for newspapers in the late 1970s, early 1980s.

Charlie

I use the silver 28 on my black M6. If I can find my wife's little digital camera this weekend I'll send a shot.

Just back from a 6 day tour of Beijing, China. I really love my silver ZI which performed flawlessly. I think this post makes me number 50?

I was thinking to order a black ZI and the C sonnar 50 mm... but I am not entirely sure after all the comments posted here...
I really ahve to stop reading reviews before buying something!

take a good look around at all the posts...m6, m7, zi, bessa...they all have a failure rate.
nothing is completely risk free but with new you get a warranty.
welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome Joe!
I have been lurking rff for a while, I was trying to push myself to take the big step in investing in a rangefinder. I went to the ZI because I cannot afford an M7, and I do not want to buy used stuff. One one thing troubles me about the ZI: the metering. I would have preferred something like the Olympus OM1 indicator, or the one on the Nikon D70. But I think that the ZI meter will be ok.

In your experience, taking into consideration that I would like to use the lens mostly wide open for street, will the focusing be a problem? I will probably have to focus at distant subjects more than often. Occasionally I will try some shallow DOF shots.
Thanks!

the meter is highly accurate even tho the readout is hard to see at times.

this camera has a very long base length so focus is very accurate.
if you have not used a rf before it will take a bit of time to adjust but nothing too arduous.
as for street shooting, many would suggest a wide angle, like a 28 or so, mid aperture and hyper focal distance shooting so shooting wide open would not be an issue.

I bought my ZI for the wide EBL; love it for many reasons. Have a 50mm Sonnar on the way from Japan. Have a roll of Neopan 1600 in process shot all with the 75mm Summilux (driving my desire for the wider EBL) - if any of the shots rise even slightly above my usual amateurish and trite norm I will post a few.
