Why Carry Your Incident Meter?

Everyone has a different method of metering light that results in different effects in different lighting situations. You have to find what works for you. Some will spot meter off mid-greys and go from there, some spot meter the highlights and then open it up 1-2 stops, some will take a reading off a few subjects and average it, etc etc etc. I went through a few different techniques and settled on one that worked for the way I shoot and develop film and print in the darkroom, which will be different for everyone else. But like Frank said, film is forgiving and you can get away with a lot, so experiment with a roll and a few different techniques in various lighting situations. It will probably be the most productive roll of film you'll ever shoot.

What you'll likely find is that your metering technique will change based on lighting conditions, subject and what you hope to accomplish.
