Why do I hate the "Mannequin Challenge" and similar video / photo fads?

I'm in the same boat. I never understood these social media fads.

Mostly because being a Gen Y'er, I never had such a tie to social media growing up and never let it influence any fads. Arguably at the time social media itself was a fad that caught on and is now in our everyday lives.

Let the kids have their fun but I often wonder about what the future will be like for them with a higher consciousness for global trends because of the internet. They will never know what its like to call your friends house to see if they want to do something, or hear about things solely by word of mouth.

John,

Maybe it's a fad, but it got my office a free lunch yesterday. A young woman from my office was at Pret yesterday and there was a "Mannequin Challenge" there and the manager comped our whole order...

Well, if there is one way to get me to get on-board, it would be with free food.

I'm 46 and think these fads are great, not as photography necessarily but as a form of social commerce. Social media, particularly twitter, have really enhanced my life and connected me with interesting people and new ideas, particularly ones from people outside my ethnic and socioeconomic groups. You certainly don't have to like it, but if you think it's inherently narcissistic, you don't understand how to use it.

Have you seen the wedding one yet?

Yep, it's the one that made me make this thread... 😀

As far as social media, I have no issue with that. I guess I've just always been opposed to big groups of people doing anything in which they copy each other. On the other hand, it is harmless and makes me wonder what is wrong with me and why it bothers me.

I can't stand then either. I thinks it's because the only purpose they serve is to get attention from others. Typical 'look at me' behaviour. Ice bucket challenge, mannequin challenge. They're all the same. Why don't we start a rangefinder selfie challenge? (That's a joke before anyone jumps on the idea).

Sorry to be (perhaps) predictable, but I reckon that it's an age thing... 🙂

No, not really... I've always felt this way. And again, I have no issue with the internet or social media. Just with groups of people doing the same thing over and over until saturation point has been met (and then beyond that point).
