Why do I hate the "Mannequin Challenge" and similar video / photo fads?

No, not really... I've always felt this way. And again, I have no issue with the internet or social media. Just with groups of people doing the same thing over and over until saturation point has been met (and then beyond that point).

Oh well, we're all different. I do have the same sort of reaction as you to the 'saturation point and beyond' mentality, but I also notice that the irritation level has increased with age. 🙂

Will the hula-hoop craze make a come-back?

I hope not.

Maybe everyone will be doing the twist, like it is 1962 again?

I hope not either.

Let the kids have their fun but I often wonder about what the future will be like for them with a higher consciousness for global trends because of the internet. They will never know what its like to call your friends house to see if they want to do something, or hear about things solely by word of mouth.

I have a friend who last year was quite anti-tech and used simply a feature phone (got to love that naming), mostly turned off... He lives by the beach and I often pass by. Calls to the landline, ringing at the door. Many times we had quite improvised, and even running into meetings.

How libertaing it can be! There's something so freeing of going down to the beach; with just a small Casio clock, the house keys, and a few pennies of change. Take a nice bath and walk around sunset time. Go home without digital noise.

Now, he used to be quite monastic but fell for the smartphone. A crazy girl that was after him (really crazy person) bombarded him digitally and nowadays
Can't stand it either. For me it's social media in general, the whole look at me part of it all.
+1. I like Instagram lately for many Photographers work (hey there Brennan!) and it is a nice media for some contact. I wanted to keep posting a bit but just thinking about the whole continuity makes me drop the thought.

The worst is when I run into that kind of narcissistic how cool I am posts, as it becomes nauseating. That I really dislike.

Even for work one's gotta have a polished LinkedIn profile.

I saw the mannequin challenge first when a friend's brother posted one on a local café. Aaaalright, kudos for holding still, but it's just another fad. I'm with you John.

'Mannequin Challenge' ...... sounds like something only dummies would do. 🙂

Cheers,

John
That was fantastic!

As a young(ish) Person - I must admit that these sorts of things annoy me also. I know that it's just as other people in this thread have said, just having fun.

In my opinion, a lot of people around my age are very driven by the 'approval' of social media (likes on Facebook, etc.) and they find themselves often doing ridiculous things in order to gain such hollow approval. Perhaps they also look for a sense of belonging, etc. in the following of others. I myself never found such a need to belong. I'm happy with my Cameras and Guitar.

I would question whether the internet leads to a higher consciousness. Everything we see on it either has a corporate agenda or is simply someone else's opinion. Even news stories are suspect these days. It sure ain't like it used to be, but then what is?

I saw someone almost get run over just the other day while immersed in texting on their smart phone while crossing the street. Why do people who own smart phones act so dumb? One last question, why do people think that isolating yourself from life and focusing on social media is in any way social?

Wait,

Is this forum not a form of social media?

We even have our own fads,

A good example is the show of your LTM thread is now on its 3rd or 4th black paint IIIc in the past week. I'm sure that has influenced a member or two to lust for a BP IIIc/f.

I think these challenges are fun,

Would rather see kids being silly on YouTube than watching them act fools out on the streets with this "#notmypresident" bull****.
