Why do we take pictures?

To me, taking pictures is about altered states of reality (is that surreal yet?) and about capturing beauty.

Any photograph is an altered state of reality. It depicts something that existed, but in a different way. I like the alterations in color or even B&W, the new view on reality purely from framing it, the altered depth of view, grain, the tonal scale, etc. The resulting photograph must leave something to the imagination and interpretation of the beholder. (In other words, HDR is out:D)

At the same time, I look for beauty to capture, in scenery, light and possibly a model.

In the past, I have created a series of pictures related with death. (see my Flickr, buzzardkid is the name.) Point in these was to explore the balance between our feelings of emptiness, fear and sorrow on the one hand and the aesthetic beauty of a well lit and well framed shot on the other hand. Death is an altered state of reality in itself. I found it very interesting to explore death using photography.
