Why do you take pictures?

I do it to relax, have fun, to record family & friends gatherings, vacations, day trips, things that interest me. Because I am a mechanic at heart, I love using the cameras that I was fascinated with but couldn't afford when I was young. Photography combines my interest in gear, people & things in the world, a effort at good composition, and chemistry.

It's easier than working for a living.

Well, no, actually. It's often more difficult. But it's also more enjoyable.

Maybe 25 years ago we were talking on the Shutterbug stand at The Show Formerly Known As Viscomm about our worst photographic nightmares. The usual things: processing screw-ups, forgetting equipment, one-eyed models (yes, I hired one once) ... But we all agreed with Monte Zucker when he said that the worst thing would be to be found out, and have to go back to a real job. Both he and I were qualified teachers; Bob was a camera repairman; Frances had worked in theatre administration; someone else had been an insurance salesman...

Ever see an old photograph some inconsequential historical event, like a picnic or a barn dance or a parade or a festival? And it helps you to see how people lived, what things were like?

Recently in the SF Bay Area one of our local photographers; Bill Owens has been rediscovered. 50 to 45 years ago he photographed suburbia (Livermore and around in California). He had moderate success then but he had to wait all that time to be recognized.
