Because it is fun
Because I have more latitude, especially in the highlights
Because I can use nice old manual cameras
Bcause these nice old cameras work where modern marvels give up

A few weeks ago I was planning to photograph a young artist. She performed in a café and the light was beyond terrible. All from the back, lots of smoke. Flash was the only way, something I really almost never resort to. Used the small Nikon SB-30 recommended here.

It really was the first time I shot my D200 and my old manual FM back to back. All my non flash pics are cr*p with either camera, the light was too terrible. The FM also showed its usual problems with low light metering, although I have learned to compensate.

BUT, the few flash pictures with the D200 were all terrible. To add insult to injury, auto focus had too much trouble so I consistenly missed the moment. The FM, loaded with Superia 800 had no trouble taming the flash and being manual focus, every shot was dead on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a snob. Digital really is better under most circumstances. But not under the ones I encountered that evening.
