Why I bought an m240 ...

I've come to the conclusion that the differences between my various cameras don't make a lot of difference to the images (in terms of technical image quality) except to the tech experts. So it comes down to what I enjoy using and what makes me smile the most. 🙂

And - kudos to your friend and his acceptance.

The Leica M 240 and/or Monochrom are the only digital cameras I would prefer over my sigma (maybe). Someday...

I do look forward to your images when you get the camera.
 
A great trip to do, Keith. All "big sky country" and lots of interesting things to drop by, I wonder if the roadside machinery museum is still along that road? The Tree of Knowledge is no more ... It was alive and kicking when I went through, but that's nearly 20 year ago now. Gets away, doesn't it?
 
Keith, I've also come into a circumstance where I've recently acquired an M type 240. I wasn't sure it would agree with me beforehand (though I did think it well might), but all I can say now is that it is the best or 2nd best camera I've ever used (for my personal version of "best") and most certainly the best camera I've ever owned. I will use my M for a long, long, time as I already know it's a real keeper. I can only hope you like it as well and that it produces photos you really enjoy. Mine most certainly does for me.

As for life - I was diagnosed with a severe lung condition a few years back, and went through several rather risky operations. It's almost a miracle that I can still talk and walk today, not to mention doing photography.

I guess all of us take life for granted at first, and then learn the hard way not to. Some get 60, 70 years of happiness before things go south, but some like me are simply glad they have the 20 or something they already have.
 
Not to hijack your thread--this is about 240 joy after all--but...I was just wondering how you made out with the little merrills and the larger SD1 (is it called?). Did you master them? I do find them tricky but they will do one thing really well eh? What was the best lens to use with the SD1?

Sorry to hear about your friend.

I too have been tempted by the M. The M9 is grand, but when I picked up the new M at the store the other weekend and did some test shooting with it, the new M is so much more responsive, fluid, and capable...

There's been a lot of controversy about the new M from the "CCD Or Despise It!" community. Strikes me as complete nonsense. The latest firmware update improves on some minor ergonomic issues with the control operations. The new battery is capable of powering it through more than double the number of exposures that the M9 battery can. The Live View capability opens it up to be able to use with a wider range of lenses. It's a little more compatible with a wider range of short focal length lenses than the M9. Etc.

I'm still tempted. I could sell the GXR kit, the M9, the X2, and all but two M-mount lenses—that would just about hit the price of the new M body, particularly if I bought second-hand. And then I can use my Leica R lenses on it with the adapter. I already have the EVF (same as the Olympus VF-2). If the Sony A7 didn't work as well as it does, it would be a lot easier to jump in that direction.

i'm beginning to hate that term!
i'm on the wrong side of 60 and sometimes it scares the crap out of me…

very sorry about about your buddy…people around me are dropping like flies lately and death seems like it's become a neighbor…always close by.

i might have gone for the monochrom myself with a nice 35mm lens...

Good for you Keith - as I like to say, things are not really expensive if they are your working tools, and you use them all the time. I hope the 240 works out wonderfully for you.

Sorry about your friend's diagnosis, maybe there is still hope for him. Life is unpredictable and can be cut short without warning - just found out that a young man who has done a lot of repair work for me was killed in an accident. Changes your perspective to realize the reaper is always somewhere in your vicinity. ;-(
