Why I dislike photography as art.

You think the artists are to blame for the sins of Smith and Friedman then? ... consumerism hasn't perverted everything yet

i'm not blaming artists for having a bottom line. i'm blaming people who make it hard for them to make a living because of this myth that favors galleries, dealers, and auction houses, who can make a few artists ridiculously rich and free to express their true selves and all that. it just grates my nerves.

it's gotten a lot worse since the sixties, btw.

Not sure. How many gallery owners do you know? I know gallery owners who've gone bust. There's a fantastic amount of chance involved at all levels. How do you think a gallery owner gets rich?

Cheers,

R.

Well that's not really the case is it? ... I'm pretty sure the Fine Art bunch would prefer to have YBAs on the wall with Charles Saatchi swanning around quaffing Chateau de Chasselas and pushing the price up by few thousand

Perhaps, just perhaps, something like Proletkult offers a way through the problems of encouraging art. It might be set up a little like the Open Science Movement, only with the remit to support people committed to producing art, by means of a tax on those who pay huge amounts for art works.

Nope! I really need to stop drinking caffeinated drinks. ;)
