We should plan an AZ RFF weekend out there. This is REALLY a great opportunity to get used to shooting people. Everyone is friendly, they are all expecting people to take pictures, plenty of easy topics to strike up a conversation, and a fun time to boot.

What do you think?

You know...those people always look more "middle ages" than renaissance to me. 😀
I'm up for it, assuming I can get away (as always).
I'd almost certainly be comfortable in that situation. I mean, how much does a person dressed in pantaloons really have to say about you taking their picture?
 
You might be better off using a P&S type camera while you work on your method. It'll be one less thing to contend with while shooting strangers. No focus. No exposure setting. Just frame and shoot.
The best ice-breaker, I've found, is chimping. It relaxes me as looking at the LCD I feel disconnected from the scene.
