Why I'm happy with the E-P1

I'm happy with my E-P1 for a number of reasons but last night I took a couple of quick shots inside an ice cream parlor (at night) with the kit lens at 1600 iso using two different art filters.

They were spontaneous and taken quickly and I was very pleasantly surprised by the captures. I love the colour of the first. Taken with the 'pin hole' filter and is a jpg straight out of the camera.

The second is the grainy B/W film and also straight from the camera.

I have been quite pleased with my EP1 too but wish for a faster lens, cant wait for that 20mm 1.7, saving my lunch money....in low light I have found the auto focus on the camera to be ok, not as bad as I would think and about the same hit and miss as my Canon 20D with the 17-40 L lens on it but the EP1 gives me image stabalization so I like that.

Its a nice camera, very usable if you can get over its freak problems.

Myself, if I go for any of this stuff, it'll be the GF-1, the 20 and 15-45 lenses and EVF. This arrangement seems to butter my digital bread about right, at least on paper.

Yeah, the first one is like the colour that attracted me to the R-D1 colour! Glad you liked it too.

The GF-1 looks great but when it's all said and done I have a soft spot for Olympus that goes all the way back to my first SLR, the OM1.

What I am looking forward to is a nice wide and fast prime. The 20 1.7 is looking good :)
 
I have tuned mine to the center focus point only. This has managed to lower my blood pressure while using the E-P1. Apparently a firmware update is a week away. Are you guys using all of the focus points or have you too gone to center only?

I use centre only. It's the same with my 20D so I am used to focusing centre then re-composing as necessary.

Having said that I have mostly been using my voigtlander lens and manual focus, so AF hasn't really been an issue. For anything fast out comes the 20D. It is the same with my R-D1. Horses for courses :)

What I would LOVE to see is a 'Snap' focus function like my GRD which is fantastic for fast 'street' stuff.

I don't think the E-P1 is perfect, but I am feeling the way Colin is. The camera just begs for a small fast lens. I opted for the zoom, knowing I would want the fast 20/1.7 when it is available. I am hoping that when I put the 20 on it I will find peace, so to say.
 
It's a great camera. I use it in Raw only. You can use the Art Filters in the Oly software after capture.
The filters are cool.....glad ya's are enjoying the camera....

Nice photo's John.

I have been playing with the Art filters while using RAW. I don't lose anything as I get my normal RAW file and a large JPEG of the 'Art' image. They are perhaps a bit more than just fun, you get a great chance to go wild and blow the cobwebs away safely in the knowledge you aren't doing anything you can't undo.

As for the GF1, I'm probably going to eat my words and not get one immediately. It just doesn't seem that much better then my EP-1, or at least until all the addons are available, like the new lenses and EVF. I do like the Panasonic control layout though.

I would shoot more RAW, but the Olympus Master 2 is so slow to load up and it crashes if I start clicking around too fast.
 
One of the nice things about the Pen is that it is not intimidating to user or subject. John's portraits show that clearly. There is a very relaxed look to the images.
Not that it can't be achieved with any other camera but with the Pen, it happens naturally....

I agree. I wasn't expecting such a 'feeling' but more and more it seems the case. When I put the R-D1 or 20D to my eye, everyone gets a little too serious :)

Nice images Rui. Looks like a great city to photograph - the history within those buildings is very evident - something I feel we lack in Australia.

Not sure if the info is outdated, but it seems like the slow focusing is from Lens not the camera itself (ppl tested pano lens on ep1 and claimed the speed to be faster). I am looking forward to the firmware update. Who knows, maybe we will get something exciting.

Krakow really has that feeling, the weight of history. It reminded me of Prague... It was a pity that I was only there for less than 12 hours.
