Why is a DNG called a DNG

As far as I can see, what is called a DNG is in reality a Digital Positive, I am sure someone will show me the errors of my ways.

B&W films are usually negatives, and you're only supposed to use a Leica to shoot B&W. Therefore, to call it a positive would be heresy.
