Why is auto bracketing (mostly) done wrong?

I dont get it.

Auto exposure bracketing on digital cameras should be simple.

But why the heck do almost all cameras get it so wrong???

For instance. The Canon 5D mk3. New camera, new technology. The AE bracketing only goes to ±3 in 2, 3, 5, or 7 frames. My old 5D does ±2 in 3 frames. My poor Olympus EP1 gives you a whopping ±1 over 3 frames. All are just not enough for really good AE bracketing of HDR exposures, and I'm not talking about that psychotic crap, I am talking about proper use for commercial work. When you are doing critical work you don't want to touch the camera in between exposures to shift the brackets around and risk moving the camera.

Now Nikon and Sony seems to have got their heads out of their asses on this and give you a generous ±5 with many options for frames in between, but unfortunately I don't use either of those systems.

What I don't get though is why everyone else seems to do it wrong?

It seems to me that all this comes down to a bit of code. Just write 5 or better yet custom set instead of 3. I mean it cant possibly be that the cameras cannot do the math....

No one? Nothing? Is it just the Camera companies being stupid or is there a real life technical problems to what I am saying here?
