Why is everyone so against Fuji Frontier CD scans?

I am never really unsatisfied with the quality. But I always think about how I could do a better of job if I had a Coolscan and Vuescan for full control.

The main two things I hate about 1 hour labs...........

1) Sometimes the machine crops out a chunk of my photo when it scans
2) Sometimes the film cutter cuts my right through a frame

I hear you, but if you didn't know what machine they used or how they got from develop -> print -> scan, it presumably wouldn't bother you, since you'd have no knowledge that the scan happened anyway. Ignorance is bliss? 😉😉😉

Hit the nail on the head!

Those are both indicative of a bad tech running the machines. Look for a different location.

You can often request that they leave the roll uncut as well.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

The folks I use for processing are www.coopersimaging.com There work has been great and it's more convenient for me to pop something in the post than trailing around Manhattan to drop off and pick up fim.

I'm surprised you can't get get process and scan from more places...

About the only time I would bother with having a lab scan (as well as soup) my C41 film, is when I'm somewhere way the hell away from home, and decide to soup my film before heading home, in which case having scans made is sort of a good "safety." Otherwise, all the scanning gets done by me.

As a number of people have already mentioned here, the quality of scanning depends on the people you're dealing with. You have to pay for the service, one way or t'other. Some are better than others, just as in many another business endeavor.
