....that I see lots of photos of the current 50 cron but none with its hood in place? I am interested in picking up this lens but I have heard good and bad about the built in hood, but more then that I have never ever seen a photo of the lens with the hood in place...since im not in a place where I can simply go look at one without traveling to the other side of the country can anyone show me a shot? If there is one of the lens mounted on a camera with the hood in place that would be even better. Trying to get a sense of perspective on this one before I lay down the rmb.

Low-res for fast loading...

I do not mind the built-in hood...makes it very hard to lose!

Impossible to lose, but a royal pain to keep in place. The slightest breath of wind seems to push it back in. I'm presently looking to trade mine for the previous version with a focus tab and a proper hood. The lens is of course fantastic.

The hood on my does not retract without some decent pressure. I did, however, once have a Hexar 50 where the hood fell back very easily. I took a very thin rubber band, wrapped it twice around the hood at the fully extended mark and just left it there. Not elegant, but it solved the problem.

What Mark said. Bluntly put, Leica built-in hoods suck. I have the APO 90/2 ASPH and the hood on that is infuriating. I bought a screw-in hood from heavystar and now everything is OK. You can do the same with the 50 Summicron.

What I disliked about the current Cron is that with a filter on it the hood only extended maybe a quarter inch past the rim of the filter. I sold mine a long time ago, that was before there were all those vented 39mm screw-in hoods on ebay. Now I would just get one of those.

I'll respectfully disagree with some folks I respect a great deal, including Peter_N 🙂

I love built in hoods, I love it on the cron, and I love it on the hex-50 as well. You can never lose it, it serves its purpose. The only thing it doesn't do is protect your front element from actual physical impact (which it wasn't designed to do).

I find that for purposes of saving space/profile, I almost never use hoods unless they are built in, thus I love built in hoods, simple 🙂 Your mileage may vary.

The only valid reason to dislike the built in hood is that it doesn't provide much physical protection because it slides in too easily, Otherwise, it is optimum for the lens. It doesn't look as aggressive/macho as a regular hood, however. 🙂

I agree, Tom. I have the previous tabbed version and the removable hood negates one of the great things about the summicron: it's small size.
