The main reason for the discontinuance of a camera is not enough sales to continue production.

You can't sell products with lead solder anywhere in the EU either now. Can still buy a used one though.....

well, you might also start to hate hasselblad for not investing into changing the camera design to use lead free electronics, or the all photographers not buying an XPAN, since bigger success will have made the investment worth while. though i am also not happy with the regulatory madness in the EU, the lead free rules seem still be a good idea (basically).

its one of the best cameras I've ever owned. The only thing I don't like is the nano-second between press and shutter release. Mine has the 45mm lens, which converts into 21mm in pano mode. I have the xpan 1 and love using it Leica style, choosing the shutter speed first (fast), then dropping in the aperture. Excellent VF.
The xpan provides a unique pano in a highly versatile 35mm platform. Handheld shots are fabulous but I also carry along a liteweight Gitzo Basalt pod used as necessary. Shooting 64 Kodachrome.
I sold off a Hexar RF to buy the xpan, which IMHO is 10x the camera. I don't shoot everything in pano, lest it get boring. I mostly shoot Leica/35mm Lux. but out comes the xpan every now and then. - Best

Quite frankly I'm glad they discontinued the Xpan. I have all the lenses and am delighted that others don't. I get to go backpacking all over the place with the knowledge that my Xpan is probably the 1st to traverse that ground and the 1st to capture that shot in such a way. That 30mm has a way about it, & I'm able to capture scenes like no other (maybe) camera can.
I paid WHAT for that gear? Looks like the price tag came with a little xtra exclusivity thrown in........

Probably low birthrates in the EU made it uneconomical to keep using children as chimney sweeps. Their scarcity made them too valuable.

The whole lead-free thing is hypocriphal : How many camera's worth of solder can be made with a Car Battery worth of Lead.
Car Batteries, Bullets, and anything that requires high reliability : Test Equipment, Aerospace, Swiss watches etc. all have exemptions.

Tin whiskers mean that new cameras may be less reliable - only mitagated by the 3 year life cycle before obsolescence of a digital camera.
