Do you have kids yet?

My wife has a rule for me. If it is collectible, and my daughter might like it when I am gone, I am NOT allowed to sell it... One Shintaro Painted Nikon SP lined up as an Heirloom.

I do, two with a 3rd coming any day now. So I obviously have to find a Black Paint M3 se each kid can have one.

I'm certainly not a collector, but will recoating the M2 in Levant Black leather from cameraleather affect the resale or value at all? The vulcanite is beat.

Please don't.

I got a beat up chrome M3 earlier this year. It's dinged up, scratched and parts of it is brassing through the chrome. Only thing is, the previous owner had the original vulcanite removed and applied a new "vulcanite" covering. It looks... odd.

Imagine a battle hardened camera, with lots of wear on the top and bottom plate. A camera that's helped other photographers tell stories though many, many frames. It's worn, a veteran... and it's wearing shinny new "vulcanite" covering?

Just doesn't look right. Keep it as original as possible, even if that means it'll loose all it's covering one day.

Best,
David

PS.: Happy birthday!

Well, I'd once have agreed - until I had fragments of Vulcanite in the shutter and on the lenses. Things are different it it is a cupboard queen or only taken out by itself, but on a hard working camera moved in a bag every day, rotten Vulcanite can make more of a mess than I like.

Anything done to get a camera out and get more use increases it's value to an owner that bought it to make photographs. As far as going up or down in terms of selling, prices are generally down anyway. So using them is the best thing going.

You could get a cute little CL for child #3 to use in their toddler years. Nikki did prefer the M3 when she was 4. Really hurt, name a child Nikki and she prefers Leica.

Good grief.... put the leather on it, paint it if you wish...use it! You can easily have it redone down the road and the satisfaction you will have in the meantime is not to be missed.

Why the heck would I have bought a beat up MG when I got this one (since sold) to drive and someone will again restore it down the road? Enjoy life.:)

I definitely bought the cameras to use. I especially hate the crud that vulcanite turns into when it rains. I'll see how it goes. The Levant Black leather feels great on all my other cameras. Thanks for the input.

I picked up both of these for less than the cost of a MP and way less than an M9. Now I have to do some closet cleaning to pay for them. My wife won't be happy, but I'll call these birthday gifts.

You could have picked up a handful of chrome ones for the price you paid for these...

I'm not dissing, but don't see the point comparing them to a MP or a M9.
