Actually, the sites you've linked to rather prove my point, with the exception of the 'sakuralove' set which are quite interesting. The rest struck me as pretty banal and derivative.

I'm happy to look at good street photography, I just don't see very much of it.

see, just taste and interpretation of the own Eye! lets all thank "paste your god here" for our different viewpoints of the world and hug 🙂

You are perfectly right gb. Problem is, too many people here would rather argue about gear than discuss images in a consrtuctive and artistic manner.🙁

To be honest in the gallery I don't see a lot of discussion of images. I see a lot of "Amazing shot" or "I like it" or "Great" or "I wonder how you're doing this all the time". I am doing this myself.

It's nice to have people comment that they like your pictures, but in the end it's neither particularly constructive nor artistic. It's good for your ego and that's it, but I'm not showing pictures to stroke my ego. I've posted a couple of rather problematic images recently, some of them quite boring, some of them gross, some of them with grotesquely overladen titles and symbolism. Do you think I would have gotten bad criticism for any of them? The RFF gallery viewer doesn't criticise, he just ignores. Maybe he doesn't think about images and all and just looks as them and separates them into the pleasing and non-pleasing ones. Hence I think a street photography forum would achieve nothing that the present gallery and (largely dormant) Critique threads and Philosophy of Photography forum don't try to achieve as well. That's why I think it's redundant.

Myself I am part of the problem in that I'm posting less criticism than I have in my head sometimes and that I post too much "I like this" style comments. The problem is not with saying that you're liking something, the problem is with not saying anything else. I'm trying to post criticism as well; at present about 1 in 4 of my gallery comments has a suggestion or a piece of criticism, and I'm working to increase this ratio somewhat.

We're a rangefinder camera site and don't have a street photography forum, but we do have a bags and straps forum.

Maybe somebody else can explain that one.

Jon, It is a gear based site. There is no portrait forum, no landscape forum etc... Bags and straps are gear.

...because it would turn into an "Urban Warfare" forum, given the strong emotions topics around this subject seem to generate; we are already seeing some here. Of course it could earn the distinction of being the first forum in which every thread ends up being locked by a Mod😀

Seriously, part of me agrees, but another part then thinks 1) do we need YET ANOTHER forum and 2) Where does it stop? You could argue there is enough demand for a "cute dogs" forum (subdivided by breed, of course), a "bicycles" forum, and a "grumpy old men" forum.

I suspect that last would get most hits...

The trouble with this and other discussion forums is that people become enraged if you suggest their lens cap is less than perfect: I shudder to think what would happen if you began to seriously criticise their photography! (Actually, I suspect they would go back to shooting lens test patterns...)

Yes, some people use the Gallery for photos of other cameras. Although I think less so than in the past.

Others use the Gallery for 'lens tests' or 'film tests'. Brick walls, newspapers, and cats mainly. A few back yards too. Again less nowadays.

CameraQuest wants the site to be more imagery by attitude change rather than technology change, and I can see it happening. The Gallery nowadays has many high quality photos, and the new 'Latest Posted' five on the main page reinforce this.

Even though I'm addicted to it (streetshooting), I'd have trouble defining it--it's kinda' like defining "liberal" or "conservative". PLEASE, I'm not trying to start a political discussion--just an example!
