Why do prices for the Olympus XA never seem to remain at one "average" level?
On ebay, some of them sell for 30-40USD, while others have been Bought-It-Now for over 100USD, and more yet end with 0 bids and 50USD?
Is there any rhyme or reason to this lack of definitive pricing for the XA?

It's a bit of a mystery to me. Just make sure you're comparing prices of the original XA and not XA-2, XA-3, etc. I think the timing of the ad and the wording (as well as perceived condition, of course) affect the final price. The good thing is, if you're patient, you can get a good deal.

Gotta catch the light.
I can only speculate based on my experience. I found out about it, and really wanted one and during a month period couldn't find anything less than 60 US. I ended up picking up one for more than that, but have been pretty happy with the results. Definitely one of my favorite all around cameras. I figure that they go hot or cold, depending on how bad people want them given in a period of time.

The colored ones tend to go quite a bit higher than black ones too.

We're all light!
I sold a working-but-definitely-not-mint XA to a fellow RFf'er fairly cheap because...well, I got it fairly cheap, and didn't feel right about charging even as much as I paid for it (and I kinda-sorta believe in karma). I wouldn't pay $100 for one unless it was very clean and came with flash. A worthwhile camera to get, if it's in good working shape.
