Why Stephanie Needs a Scanner

Steph, Steph, Steph....

What I think you want is a Minolta DiMage Scan Elite II (2900). You should be albe to find one via the usual suspects (eBay et al) easily enough. Why this scanner? Two words: Digtal ICE. if you shoot a lot of C41 film (which seems to be the case, according to your posts), this would be a no-brainer (I apologize for using this term in a lot of my recent posts around here). I had one, and got a lot of use from it until I suddenly had the bucks to buy a Minolta 5400 (long story...e-mail me privately for the details). Once you have a good film scanner, the only need you have of a lab is to simply run your film through the machine - no prints, not even cutting the film (believe me, these days, the less physical contact a lab has with your film, the better). There will be no excuse for the lab not to turn around your film in reasonable time under these conditions. And, the results of your own scanning and printing should be better than what your lab can deliver; I learned this the first time I had a film scanner (Nikon LS-10) and printer (Epson Stylus Photo 1200) quite a few years back. And that gear is light-years behind what I have now. And what you already have on film will yield greater surprises than you may know.

Actually, I shoot almost NO C41. Mostly B&W and slides. I dislike most C41 films (Fuji Superia 100 and 400 and the now defunct Agfa Optima 100 and 400 are the only ones that I do shoot occasionally) and favor slide film (Velvia, Sensia, Provia, Elite Chrome) for color due to what I see to be better quality color. Developing it seems to be a different matter entirely; I have a ton of E6 stuff to develop, but haven't gotten the mailers from B&H to do it yet.

So yeah, the Scan Duals would be okay for me.

There were some people on CE Nelson's site who were having some problems with the Minolta unit. Those with problems seemed to experience the same problem -- unfortunately, I can't recall what that problem was ... something about it locking up after one scan ... maybe that was it.

I's hard to be patient when GAS strikes (one look at my camera shelves proves that), but I honestly think that given your stated needs/wants, you would be better served by a dedicated film scanner. I'd also suggest keeping aside a bit of cash for an inexpensive film cutter and film sleeves or slide mounts. Develop-only service on film is cheap, but you'll still have to do something with the resulting rolls before you can scan it, either by cutting and mounting it in slide mounts or cutting and sleeving it.

I should also point out that Digital ICE works wonders for slide scanning as well (but won't do anything for conventional b/w film scanning). The DiMage Scan Elite II (not to be confused with the 5400 II) has a pretty good rep for reliability, and mine saw a lot of use, with beautiful output. Second choice would be the DiMage Scan Dual IV: no Digital ICE, but higher resolution and a still-reasonable price. I've set up a few for my freelance clients, and they like them "lots".

I use the 3170 for all my work. I don't like it, but . . . it is really all I need. And, it scans my 645 frames to make perfectly decent 8x10 high resolution prints (1200dpi). Not so nice on slide film, but B&W and C41 turn out fine.

I want a Nikon Coolscan 9000ED . . . but I promised I wouldn't fill up my new credit card with unnecessary stuff.

Go to www.shutterflower.com and look at the section marked "Vacation pics". Those are all 645 size on 120, scanned on my 3170 at maximum resolution. Some E-6, some C41 and some B&W.

I do my own scanning myself in a Minolta Scandual IV after I finally dumped a not lammented Pacific Images 1800i.
But that same pattern of uncooperation with customers who don't pay for paper photos is only too evident in Lisbon on the part of photo labs. Whenever I have a color film developed at a local lab they'll always soil it with dust and fingerprints, and will try their best to make the bill go up with unasked for stuff. Last Elite I developed in C41 was paid for as if it was a box of mounted E6 slides.

My Lord! Will somebody here finally take a hint! How MANY times do we all have to listen to Miss S's ever so thinly veiled request for a FREE scanner? Come on people. And as if the begging were not enough she is also using the forum to sell video games. Video games? Here? It's all good though being as she explained to the moderator that she would LET him remove the fs post in a few days if it did not sell. She also 'splained that the money from the sale would go for a scanner, soooo it was all in the forums best interest, right? Please someone in a good place financially for the love of all that is good GIVE HER A SCANNER .

How long have you been lurking here Pepto?
From you first post I think that you completely missed the spirit of this community!

Sorry, this is not not meant agressive or offensive, but I really think if somebody missed anything here then this is you, fgianni !! 😀 😀
It hasn't to do anything with the "spirit" of this community btw, whatever this spirit might be.

Oops, now I realise, oh well I lost an opportunity to keep silent...

As Socke I have a Canon FS 2710 film scanner, which actually should be not very expensive and doing a good job, both for web use of images and eventually for print up to A4 format.

Bismuth subsalicylate is the active ingredient in the popular medication Pepto-Bismol that is used to treat nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea and other temporary discomforts of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract

My thoughts tend more to a pharmaceutical root. 😀
If so I'd say this is well chosen name . And it would make my assuption more probable that this is an alias identity of a RFF member .

Without the veil of a pseudonym I must agree that it is Stephanie that misses the spirit of the forum. I have long been offended by the shameless begging and only looked at this thread this morning to see what depths it may have sunk to. Imagine my delight at reading "Pepto's" post 🙂. Thank God someone finally said something...

The most interesting question tho among all questions one can ask concerning this
s tory for me is why it took that long ?

Stephanie is young; she's only asking for help and advice. How about cutting her some slack?
Isn't this what we've been doing for the past year? 😀

Sir, you might indeed be concealing your true identity (your REAL psuedonym!) but I must say on the other hand, I certainly applaud your candor in voicing the true nature of this thread.
