Why?

Why do I keep looking at the Zeiss Ikon even though I have a perfectly good Contax G2 with 28/45/90 glass (that I love but don't use that often) as well as SLR gear (Nikon FE, F100 and D100 with a D200 on order)?

Why don't I just get out a shoot some Tri-X with my G2 instead of staring at my computer screen and drooling on my keyboard?

Why?

Because a manual focus rangefinder with a 35mm Biogon is exactly what you need, at least I need one.

And I have a G2 and a G1 with 28,35,45 and 90 as well as a nice RTS and 167MT and a Canon D60 :)

And on a second thought, it's not as if you'd buy an irresponsible expensive Leica, is it?

Oh! And on a second look, welcome to RFF, the home of incurabel G.A.S*

Maybe you feel that the ZI will provide more of the classical rangefinder experience than the G2. If you get along well with the ZI, then you may eventually want to go even more retro with an M3, M2, or even a Barnack LTM. :D

After a ZI, well if you get on well with it you could 'upgrade' to a Leica....... :D

I'll get my coat

Because you already know how good the Zeiss glass is, from your G2 experience, but you also know that the G2's viewfinder is a bit small and doesn't let you see beyond the frame borders the way you can with a bright-line finder system. You also know that the G2's AF system, although very quick and reasonably precise, doesn't always give the same sense of knowing your exact focus point that you get when using an optical rangefinder.

Or maybe because your film-winding thumb just feels in need of exercise!

Mostly because you understand that the Ikon and the G2 are fundamentally different types of camera, just as your G2 and FE are fundamentally different types of camera. There will be some types of photography for which you feel one is the best tool; other types for which you feel most comfortable with a different tool. Since money doesn't seem to be much of a problem, why not acquire one if you think it will be useful?

Who says you can't do both? Go out and shoot some Tri-X, and then come back and drool on the keyboard for a while.

Why do I keep looking at the Zeiss Ikon....

Because Zeiss is nice and it is new and you long for one. Oops. Those are my reasons.

I think that the reply by jlw has concisely brought my underlying thoughts into focus.

Now the only question is limited edition now or black in several months. I don't know how much longer my keyboard can operate in its current condition.
