For my FM3a I had a nikkor 28/3,5. Very sharp and compact lens. Then sold and buyied a 28/2 AI'd at 150€. I like interior shots and the latter lens works welk for me.

I have the ZF2 2/25 and it's definitely an "uber" lens (in terms of resolution capable) however I acknowledge this is a very expensive option and probably on film you might be not able to enjoy it entirely because of the lesser medium resolution ( = less lens stress ) than the latest MP-loaded DSLR's where every focusing mistake is clearly visible (at a pixel level). Film in this respect is more forgiving.
My suggestion would be considering (as others did) the F/2.8 version - much more affordable and versatile with its 1:2.3 macro - unless you really need the F/2.
Since others suggested also longer lenses, here's my take
- CV 40/2 or the inexpensive 50/1.8 AIS (stepped nose)
- Tamron 90 f/2.8 (older version with aperture ring) or Nikon 105 f/2.5 AI (I prefer it over the AIS version because of the longer focus throw which should turn into a better focusing accuracy, especially at middle to long distances)

Wow that 105 is spectacular! Thanks Dino for that picture. Another poster also praised it. One to look at in the future. At the moment I think I am going to start with the 28 f2.8 AIS and go from there...thank you all for the information!

Good choice. Next up a 105. I prefer the AI version as it has a longer focus throw than the AIS and is easier to get more precise focus.

Well, I've won an auction for a very early Ai 24/2.8. It was incorrectly listed as non-Ai. It looks a little rough but the glass is reported as ok, and I got it for $63! So, fingers crossed it is ok on arrival. I'll report back soon with my impressions. Speaking of the 105/2.5, here's one of my little girl from last year...
