The title to this thread is wrong on so many levels...
Ohh Dear - we are a little grumpy, aren't we?
@ ronin - I would suggest the "Ansel Adams solution": A nice 4WD with a platform and a tripod (any model) on the roof. Always nice with a mobile solution! Now, there is revenge for you...

The purpose of a tripod is to support the weight of the camera gear you will use on it, and hold up for years of use. I have found the Vivitar aluminum with the channel lock legs to do just that. At least the old ones did. I don't know if the newer "digital" ones are as good or not. They also had two models where the center column could be moved down at several angles, until at least it could be horizontal. That wasn't something I used often, but there were times that simplified things a whole lot. One model had channel lock legs and the other had round legs that were adjusted by twisting them.
Those two models are hard to find these days, but non-adjustable column types are all over ebay.

Thanks everyone for the serious feedback as well as for the cool Bogen trivia. I knew Bogen distributed for Manfrotto until they were both acquired by the same company. That's why I figured an older Bogen might be a good way to get an affordable but reputable tripod.
I did pull the trigger on a Bogen 3001 with 3025 head. It was a little steep at $150 shipped but for whatever reason, this guy had a brand new, unused setup that was just missing the original tags! Really can't wait to brandish it all weekend in front of my wife / pilferer. And, yes, it comes with the original Bogen bag ... this guy!! lol
