Apologies if someone has posted on this exhibition already, I didn't find it on the forum but I can be a klutz when it comes to using the search function!

I went to this last weekend, as expected it is an amazing photography exhibition. The quality of the images is stupendous, both technically as well as in terms of subject matter. Seeing the images as big as they are shown (about a foot by a foot and a half) is very nice. The animals and their behaviour, and the nature shots, illustrate the beauty of nature, the niches inhabited by different life forms and the astonishing behaviour that can be observed. The section on young photographers is also impressive, although interestingly you start to see the limits of the cameras more in those cases (see later for more on that).

The way the exhibit itself is arranged is okay. The tickets are timed, so expect a huge influx of people at your allotted time. People stand quite close to the pictures and all move in one direction, making it sometimes difficult to see a picture. Patience, and at least an hour to an hour and a half, are necessary.

Now - it's really interesting to see what cameras are being used, and what format. I think about 90% was digital (no surprise there). Of those, I think two thirds is Canon 1D Mark II/III, with the rest Nikon D3. It then slowly trickles down to lower spec models, especially in the young photographer section, but Nikon and Canon are seen most often. There were a few film shots, all on Fuji Velvia 50 or 100. Most were on 35 mm: Nikon F5 and F6 mostly. But also a Leica R9, on film! And a few large(r) format: an Xpan (!), an Alpa 4x5 and a Fuji 617. Interestingly, some of the film images looked worse than the digital images, which makes me wonder whether they were scanned properly or not.

In all:
1. cool images
2. animals are weird
3. nature is beautiful
4. film's not dead
