Right now I'm using a slip-on yellow filter but I've been looking at a smaller screw-in version. I've found a few filters by Walz that are advertised as being "18.5mm". Is this actually different from the 19mm thread the Elmar takes, or just a case of rounding? I can't seem to find any lens that actually uses 18.5, and it seems like an odd sizing.

I think it's a case of rounding. The Walz filters were made for the Argus C-3 Cintar lens. But they will fit on the 50mm f/3.5 Elmar without problems. I have never tested them with the 35mm f/3.5 Elmar, so I can't tell if they'll cause vignetting problems.

Hi,
I don't know what make the filters are that you are thinking of using but you ought to be aware that the filters need to have a very thin mount. Otherwise they obscure the aperture tab and have to be taken off every time you want to change the aperture.
