You mean soft portrait like a thambar right I mean a summitar is not a subpar lens and certainly not a soft portrait lens in fact it's quiet sharp and has near to full summicron performance.

The samples on dyxum have the typical new Zeiss look sharp sharp sharp somewhat cool and very clinical. Any pre asph Leica lens should look better.

No. I think the same fortysomethings are buying/switching/trying cameras over and over and over again. I predict that the same ones that bought the X-Pro 1 will now buy the A7. Rinse and repeat.

Every sort of person is buying the A7r, those you describe + many DSLR pros + film users without any RF digi body + extreme tightwads who hold out for the best bang.
It's pretty clear now that with the right glass it's sharpest FF sensor ever offered by anyone.
Landscape shooters are over the moon.
"Get oof my lawn my lawn!" curmudgeons hate the thing and the buzz, of course.

But why would they bother with old lenses from Leica? I have a Summitar, and it is not something I would base a camera purchase on.
I'm sure the sensor is good, but in a year or two there will be a new and better one.

If the A7r will take my 21mm SA and Summitar, I will consider it. So far I have no definitive answer from anyone on that. I still need to get my hands on one!

Who said anything about basing the purchase on the summitar? It might or might not be one of many lenses that work well.
Re the sensor: it's not like the landscape is littered with FFs you can use with RF glass. In a year or two I may be dead. My daughter will be 16, and the local forests will be eaten up and burned up.
To each his own, but give others some credit.

There are Summitars and then there are Summitars. Avoiding the hex leaf and un-coated models gives you a rather sharp lens. This one, from a 1949 Summitar, was shot with film, not digital. However, every pimple is there in its glory; a good Summitar is VERY good, and belongs in every serious collection.

I'm wondering if the Summitar will safely collapse on a Sony A7r (when using a Novoflex adapter), without damaging the sensor...
I've accidentally collapsed mine more than once on an M9, but fortunately it didn't damage anything when I did.
