Lens options aside, and just roughly speaking... do you think the new Leica X1 will have about the same image quality as the old Leica M8?

Given that an X1 will be about the same price as a used M8 (sans lens) perhaps it could be a viable option for us bottom feeders who can't spring for an M9? ;-)
 
What's the point of this? How can we judge the image quality of the X1 until a production version is the hands of users.

You might as well ask if the next generation of unicorns will have horns as long as the last, this question makes as much sense.

The sensor type is completely different for a start. There will be, at the very least, qualitative differences seen because of the CCD vs CMOS sensors. Or did I completely misread the specs released so far (sensor, camera-size, fixed lens etc etc)?

I think it's an interesting question.
The CMOS should bring better high ISO performance.
It would makes sense to speculate that at ISO 800 and up given the same lens on both X1 and M8. The X1 will deliver better files.
It will be interesting to see. I am very interested in the X1 as a go to P&S.

If the X1 does actually come in with better IQ than the M8, it will also be better than the M9. That'll twist more than a few knickers.

I vote yes---Subjectively.
 
Unless you've shot a camera with a FF sensor, you can't imagine the difference it makes. If the M9 doesn't completely blow away the M8, Leica messed up big time.
 
I wondered about this a little too because rumors said the sensor was a Sony one and right now their sensor technology is great so is there the possibility of it having high ISO performance like for instance a Nikon D300?I think if it did it would be quite a nice little camera despite the crap lens speed which I think is the reason this won't sell well. And at 2000 dollars it really isn't that expensive if it has top notch image quality which other fixed lens point and shoots have let us all down on one way or another. If you went out and got a top of the line crop DSLR with the equivalent 35mm lens then it would still cost a lot and it would be huge.

If only Leica had stuck a lens worthy on it... 2.8 doesn't cut it as a prime in my book.

Image Stabilization??

Image Stabilization??

I can't answer the question posed. You will have to ask someone that has some experience with both cameras.

The specs that I've seen don't include image stabilization, but I have seen menu screen shots that included some sort of image stabilization option. Does anyone know if and what type of stabilization is available? Low light / stabilization / CMOS and some newer technology might just make this a better choice, ignoring the fixed lens issue, at shooting in poor illumination than the "M" digitals.

Well no kidding. Once there are real world images to compare then everyone will agree on which camera has the best image quality.

It might just have a wider dynamic range than the M8 whose is about the same as an lx3(according to dxo).To make the move from film this is more important than asa performance above 1250,to me that is,those blown highlights just make me cringe.
 
For that price it better be better than the M8, though I'm not entirely confident it will be. It has the obvious fault from the get go (slow fixed lens, price, no image stabilization, etc) and it'll have to really excel to not be considered incredibly overpriced.
 
Interesting question, all based upon smoke and mirrors, but none the less interesting.

I wonder if anyone out there who has say a D700 and like a D90/60 could post an example and point us to them of full frame vs C-lipped?

No, the interesting question is whether the D750 and the D95 will have comparable image quality.
