Could it be CV is losing interest in producing new M mount lenses?

May sound absurd, but... If I'm not wrong, for the last two years they've produced just one new lens, the 50 1.1 Nokton, being the 12 and 15, reissues from previous LTM models with modifications...

What do you think? Will they keep offering us more new interesting M options during the next months? Did they do -already- what they wanted to do? Will they go any other direction?

Cheers,

Juan

Well... they may have only issues a few new M mount lenses but they have released a bunch of SLR lenses as well. They're product catalog is pretty robust so I don't really see the need for them to pump out new lenses. The only thing that's really missing is an 18mm lens, but that's the subject of another debate 🙂

I'd be happy if they don't spend too much money on R&D over the next year or two and use that savings to lower the price of some of their new M mount re-issues... or at least keep prices stable. There's ALWAYS speculation as to what they're going to be up to next... will it be a digital body... will it be some amazingly fast wide lens...

As far as I can see they'll probably follow their current trend with a re-issue of the 35mm Ultron, the f1.5 Nokton and the 75 and 90 all in M mount over the next couple years... I don't see a digital body coming... I doubt there'll be a new film body any time soon. They've already boldly gone everywhere the other camera companies dared not go, all that's really left is to fill in the gaps, cross the T's and dot the I's. (What I would love to see is a re-issue of the 90mm and 125mm Macros in Canon Mount, but I doubt it)

Robust catalog indeed... And in expansion to several mounts, and making theirs other brands' customers: that's good... And I'm afraid they do have lots of LTM and M lenses and cameras as to feel they have a real need for more: I guess I just like CV too much... I hope they plan to reissue the 28 3.5 in M mount...

Cheers,

Juan

Leica still has not issued a 28mm Summilux, so there's a fast wide niche unfilled. And no 24mm Summicron either, another unfilled slot. I bet CV could produce a more compact 18/4 than they make for Zeiss.

They make good lenses for Zeiss too, but they're usually big, and we all have our preferences... Personally I'd put more money in a CV line with more lenses in the compact/pancake styling for M mount... Sacrifice in image quality is almost nothing, but the difference in saved space and weight is considerable...

Cheers,

Juan

Yeah, other than the new m12, m15, two new 50s, some SLR lenses, m43 adapters, and an amazing multi-finder, what have they done for you lately?

Chris, no one here says they are not doing anything, but they've gone other directions, and I already said it can be good for the company... But only one new M mount lens in two years is not much if we speak of that mount...

I bought a year ago the 15 because it can be filtered, and I bought some other previous lenses and three Bessa cameras. As for your question, for the last two years, they haven't done anything for me: no new M mount products. Basically two or three reissues and one 50 I wasn't interested in.

Cheers,

Juan

How many M lenses do they need to offer? How many options does the market need? How many options does Leica offer? I bet the # is pretty similar (I have not counted). I just think that from a practicle stand point you don't need a zillion option for RF photography. 28/35/50 is all that is needed for the vast majority of all of our shots (I am guilty of owning way too much stuff too based on this statement). Keep in mind that CV is also looking to deliver a price v quality bargain for their customers. That said, should they really pursue building a 21/2 (just an example) which is going to cost $$$$$. Sure they can offer one for less than Leica can if they want to, but I think there is a ceiling above which CV lenses are not delivering their bargain mission.

(or) for $1600 for a 24/1.4... I would probably wet myself getting the payment the Mr Gandy quickly enough 😱

Same here, the 24 Lux is the only Leica lens I would like to own with no competitors but find too expensive be it new or used. Also, if CV could make it a bit smaller 😉
