Passing by Willets Point yesterday, I noticed a construction hoarding had gone up around the central 'pie point' you see from Roosevelt avenue. It seems they are about to start demolishing that section. It is light construction, so it won't take them long.
Over the last few months, I've seen the same group of regulars hanging around on the street there, but not a lot of work going on. The place still looks the same, minus the activity.
Anyone in the NYC area wanting to get shots of what is left of the old, or as it disappear, should head out there in the next week or weeks. I'll be trying to squeeze some photo time into my commute if I can.

Christian,

Even last summer there was not a lot left there. The area already was pretty dead and felt more abandoned than ever because of being vacant.

Yes, it has been sitting there waiting for the executioner like that for a while. I rode a loop around the other streets a few months ago, and there were some shops still working. It seems they are waiting for the last holdouts to clear.

Hasn't been fun to photograph there in awhile... I miss those days.

John,

I agree. I found this to be very said. It seemed like the last raunchy place in NYC, meanwhile everywhere else has been sanitized and updated IMHO in a bad way.

Glad I had the wisdom to shoot locations like this before they were gone.

Willet's Point has been gone for a while.

I lived in and watched the Fulton Fish Market dissolve before my eyes.

Fred,

Another raunchy place gone/goodbye.

Remember the Highline when it was filled with Ho's and junkies.

Remember Morningside Park when it was a mugger's alley and the area around 5th Avenue nearby was all boarded up an no one lived there because it was a no man's land littered with stripped cars.

Remember when there were street walkers on 85th Street on the Upper East Side.

Where are raunchy places to shoot? For me if you don't have raunchy you don't have urban. NYC is becoming just a big suburb.

I went last weekend and found the barricades. Really too bad how they are turning such an amazing place into a mall..

Not the Suburbs just making it more spanking new and high end, the South
Bronx is next, a real estate friend of mine say's there calling it Sho-Bro. get
your apartments there now before prices go up!

Time to come on down to Newark. Lol
They are in the process of painting the longest mural in the east coast, the bridge leading into Newark pen is getting a facelift..
