With RED DOT or Without?

No one has ever noticed the dot. I think it's an urban myth. Anyone who knows anything about cameras knows a Lieica when they see one, whether it's an R, an M, or a screwmount. Although when I had a Bessa R3A a couple of times some yuppie scum practically broke their necks trying to see if it was a Leica. After figuring out that it wasn't they left, which is actually a good reason to shoot a Bessa.

After picking up an M again after some time, I'm beginning to think that being Stealth is using cameras people are used to seeing. Red dot or not, on the streets of a first world country, people are going to notice a Leica M rangefinder more than most modern compacts and DSLR's.

In some cultures they put red dots on their women's foreheads. Unlike the women that I meet, at least the Leicas are silent.

Maybe it's no differnt than the younger crowd with their fancy rims and loud mufflers? "Hey EVERYBODY! Look at ME with my cool Leica!" Ways to get the younger generation into rangefinder cameras:

Lens hoods with chrome "spinners"?

Loud ratcheting sound when you stroke the advance lever?

Tremendous (electronic) "THUD" sound when you push the release button?.

Replacement back flap for M bodies that have an LCD screen. When you push its red dot it lights up and reads "Ooooh! Great fu**g shot! Yeah!"

I bought a supply of red dots and put them on every camera. Alas there is no proper place for them on the 111C and 111F, so Ijust them on top. People stop me all the time and ask when the red dot screw models were produced. I just explain how they were the first of the special edition models and were late 1940 or early 1950. They are impressed and usually want to know where they can get one and how much they cost.

Be carefule if you find one for sale as there will be hundreds of fakes in the market place in the near future. But a fake is easy to spot because only I know the proper exact position.


So please don`t cover the red dot. It is a status mark. You would not take the Rolls Royce Lady off the hood would you? This is exactly the same thing.

It's there, covered with gaffer tape. The Leica logo, too. And also the Olympus logo on my DSLR. You want me to carry your logo around, then you pay me.
