I had posted a thread a while ago about relubing an Industar-61, and how, now that the caked up grease is gone, it wobbles. I was having trouble focusing to infinity, but that was a useless quest because it would wiggle out of whack at a slight touch.

Well, it's late and I can't sleep, so I broke out the lens to check it out again. When I mount the lens and set it to inifinity, I can get it to a spot where the patch lines up. I figure that's a start. I pulled off the rear ring, and I can play with the domed ring to see roughly where that spot was when I was looking through the VF.

(the part that doesn't sit well is this one, in Matt Denton's hand: http://homepage.mac.com/mattdenton/photo/cameras/industar_relubing/4-dome_ring_wax.jpg)

It seems like the proper fit is pushing the domed ring's one spotty side right up against the helicoid.

My question is, what can I do to secure it? Although I couldn't really test it before doing it, I thought about putting a bit of Krazy Glue on the inner lip of where the domed ring sits, just being careful so it doesn't interfere with where it rotates against the focusing ring.

Would this be bad? Is there another way?

bump ... no comments at all? I figure the Krazy Glue is a drastic option, but if I fail I'm only out $12. Despite that, I'd rather try something I can undo, if that's at all possible.

Thanks for responding, Joe. I know, I kinda wish that I hadn't relubed it now. If I knew there was a hard-caked grease I could put in, I might try it. But that probably entails putting in cheap grease and shelving it for a dozen or two years.

do a search and see what comes up. i can't remember in what thread but some of the handier folk were mentioning what they used.

that old crap had to come out sooner or later or the focus would have been sticky till it froze up.

thanks, guys. I tried to add more of the lube I had, something simply named Super Lube that's pretty thick that I found at Sports Authority. It held things in place pretty well, but it wasn't seated properly, or at least it took some fiddling to get the partch right at infinity. By then, though, the grease loosened up and it was wobbly again, though less so. I might try that RS lube. I found an old thread where einolu and Jon Goodman were talking about auto brake grease, and someone in it mentioning Mobil 1, so I got a plan D, too.

FWIW - I've had good luck with a silicon based
automotive wheel bearing grease... sorry, don't
know what brand. It's dark red and I've had it in
a jar for a gazillion years.

Hah! I just did a search for those words and found one brand called Red-n-Tacky. Probably what I need, but a 14 oz. tube costs twice as much as the lens. I found a $3 one called Timken that comes in a pomade-type jar. I'm tempted to think it's the one just by the association of its shape. 😛

thanks for the suggestion!
