Hi folks,

some weeks ago I visitied a world cultural heritage site: Volklingen Steel [Voelklinger Huette], Germany
Built in the beginnings of 1900 and opererating until '89.
Since a couple of years it's got the status from the UNESCO. I shot XP2 in M3.

Here some examples :

I do like the special character of the XP2 with the antique looks of this industrial complex. I'll show some color shots, too.

How do you like the small set ?

If you have shot some other world cultural heritage sites, let's see some of your photos...

Sukothai, Thailand.......this is/was a World Heritage Site up until a week ago when the country decided to pull out of the World Heritage Convention last week due to border disputes with a temple on the Thai/Cambodian border.....today is election day and it looks like they will have a new government in power soon , and hopefully, they will re-join the World Heritage Convention.....

BTW, a great idea for a thread

Hello Michael,

thanks for joining. Great shot btw, yours?
And it looks like the opposition won with absolute majority, hopefully the transition of power will be peaceful.

Interesting. I have been to more of these than I thought. I'll research the memory banks and see if I have any pictures.

Very nice images, all!

It's always nice to learn something and I did today. Before this thread, I had never heard of a "World Heritage Site"...still not sure exactly what it is even though I looked it up.

Makes one wonder why one has never heard of such a thing. I am not alone.

Thanks for posting!:)

Euphamism. "Heritage site" equals honey pot for extracting money from tourists.

Now don't get me wrong because these places are usually worth visiting but giving that status usually involves turning them into horrendous tourist magnets if they weren't already.

Thanks. Then I have a few (mostly shown before in different contexts) :)

Cheers,

Roland.

Hello Roland,

thanks for joining, I've also been to these two you've shown above, Florence and Yosemite (not knowing that they carry the label/are on the list) and yes there's always the touristy aspect to most of the sites. But in case the label helps to preserve these sites then for me this is a good thing.
Cheers.

I guess the point about these sites is that they are the only or the best place in the world to showcase a specific cultural or natural phenomenon of importance. Of course, many of the cultural and natural heritage sites are well-known anyway or too obvious to miss as wonders of some sort, like the palace of Versailles and its parks or the Grand Canyon. These more famous sites are your usual travel destinations, and being listed adds little practical value for the travellers or the locals. Some other of the listed places you would either not visit at all (not knowing about them) or not fully appreciate their importance or uniqueness should you just happen upon one.

All I can say is that I recommend visiting these places if you have an interest in history or nature. I guess the nominations are pretty subjective like all such things (just see the 10 criteria of which the site needs to meet at least one to be considered), which means that some of the sites may be borderline cases while other equally important and interesting sites are not yet on the list.

Now don't get me wrong because these places are usually worth visiting but giving that status usually involves turning them into horrendous tourist magnets if they weren't already.
Depends. I have more experience of very peaceful world heritage sites with practically no extra services than of sites going bad (due to appearing on the list). As an example, one site I visited a couple of years ago, the Bronze Age burial site in Sammallahdenmäki, only had a shoddy little kiosk where you could buy a box of juice along with your free brochure of the site. Just valuable service for the visitor, nothing else.

But I get your point. And I agree these sites are worth visiting. I will post some pictures later.

One from Shiretoko National Park (知床国立公園), Hokkaido, Japan. The place is called "Shiretoko Goko, five lakes (知床五湖)". Shiretoko is a UNESCO world heritage since 2005 and located in the east of the most northern of the four main Japanese islands, Hokkaido.

The Medina of Mogador (Morocco)

The Medina of Marrakesh (Morocco)

Tower of Belem (Portugal)

Monastry of the Hieronymites (Portugal)

Old Istanbul (Turkey)

Kyoto (Japan)

Angkor (Cambodia)

Mont Saint Michel (France)

Reunion Island (France)

More to come if I can find the shots! Looking at the list, I must have been to nearly 30-40 of these sites.

+1. And dictating the people who live there what they are allowed to do and what not.
