World cultural hertage sites... SHOW US

Euphamism. "Heritage site" equals honey pot for extracting money from tourists.

Now don't get me wrong because these places are usually worth visiting but giving that status usually involves turning them into horrendous tourist magnets if they weren't already.

You've been to the wrong places, I guess :D

+1. And dictating the people who live there what they are allowed to do and what not.

Sounds like You're from Dresden... :D

Or from Cologne :)

But then again you can't have the cake and eat it, too - either you can be a tourist tr^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H world heritage site for your unique scenery and skyline, or you can build office towers and bridges in said scenery and skyline :D

No its what english heritage are trying to do to stonehenge which has made a lot of people

you have always been able to drive right past it and get a good view. And there is a public bridleway which runs right past it where you can park for free and look all you want for free (from a distance).

So to stop people from seeing it for free they have been trying to build a tunnel several miles long so that you can't drive past. And to make you pay they want to build a visitor centre in the middle of salisbury plain and bus you to the site. In other words they want to destroy the setting its in just so that they can rip everyone off for what is a 10 minute attraction. Its only a pile rocks albeit very special rocks.

Fortunately there seems to be a problem funding the multi million pound tunnel and it seems to have been shelved for now. If you ever visit it make the effort and goto avebury which is (currently) free and a much bigger stone circle which runs right round the village. ( a bit north of stonehenge).

Of course if there's some money to make, someone is always trying to rake it in, sad truth.

At least the thread is starting to take up a little pace although it's not about showing one's gear:p

ASking for photos and saying "worth visiting" are 100% contradictory to complaining about them becoming "touristy", isn't it??

Saltaire Village is free, the 1853 Gallery (the best and most accessible collection of David Hockney's pictures there is), Robert's Park and the Church are too ... one has to pay for the coffee but £1.55 seems fair to me given the age of the cafe

No, Dresden is OK. The valley is on the list, the citizens decided that the bridge is more important than being on this list and went on.

Cologne is a different story: the cathedral itself is on the list, placed in a surrounding which was new constructed after WW2 and not part of the heritage. But Unesco enforced rules what should be allowed to be built on the other side of the rhine, a mile away...

OK, didn't want to kill this thread. Here's my contribution:

Church on Chiloe / Chile (far from touristy over there)

I was at Angkor last week and the shot of Ta Phrom temple at Siem Riep (Angkor) with the tree growing out of the roof is interesting as the photograph taken now has the foreground stuffed up with a wooden platform and nice white ropes to keep the visitors off of the structure. Unfortunately, such a shot is now impossible without CS 5 and a case of beer. I managed to squeeze in with a Tri Elmar at 16 from the side, but it lessens the impact of the shot significantly. I will try to post its present state when I get home. Has any one been to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, we plan to go next month?

Old Rauma

Old Rauma

Here are some pictures from Old Rauma, an old wooden Nordic city. The atmosphere is relaxed yet urban and there are about 600 buildings in the area, so it is a nice place for a leisurely stroll with or without a camera. These pictures were taken around Midsummer, when most locals are out of town at their summer places. Add a little rain and the old town was practically empty.

One of the few stone buildings in Old Rauma, the town hall built in 1776:

The cannons in the 3rd picture are aiming at Sweden, just across the Sound. :)

While the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site does attract tourists, it also requires the site meet certain criteria, in particular it must be taken care of properly and actually measures to protect the place from damage by tourists must also be in place. There are two types of world heritage sites, cultural and natural. I did a lot of work on this a while ago so I can't remember all the details, but the UNESCO web site has lots of info. Sites can also be removed from the list if they don't meet criteria, for instance if the site is allowed to be over -developed or if commercial use is granted.
