As usual excellenty amazing photo`s and stories, but picture of the year... another step taken towards mobile photography, just imagine photo of the year in world press photo is so flat, lifeless, nothing else but document, excellent composition, excellent story or whatever but just look at it is an awfull peace of art! nor it has to be! but just look around other photos of the year, it was something megical....

Newsphotos should tell a story ........ not be a piece of art.
Salgado makes art ...... but when i look at his pictures i only see the beauty of his pictures instead of the sorrow or horror of the content ...... not good imho;)

If his images were ugly, you wouldn't look at them at all. To communicate, a photo should be good.

I do not deny the photo has to be good .....
But good can be defined on many leves ..... a good picture (= a picture that communicates what it is supposed to) does not have to be a piece of art ....... :)

The language of photography is visual, and good photo is good visually. Not much can be done about it. Very few complain that say Erich Maria Remarque used mastery writing in describing trench life of the first World War, why not the case with photography?

in order to comunicate visualy you have to, I am not talking about why he shot digital, I am talking about why people like it, you like it and can never tell difference so does 99% of americans (maybe more) so do they like hollywood :)

too much sorrow and not enough hope...
I don`t think there is hope outside of pictures anyway, so showing alot of hope would meen closing eyes, do you want that? I know alot of people do :D

flame on!

Two sides to every story... most have to do with the political actions of a country... not a religious or cultural statement.

Of course that's what they'd like you to believe. And they've succeded, too. What a dupe!

One could say the same thing about your statement.

Regardless. I don't condemn americans as a whole for the actions of their government. Nor do I condemn Palestinians, Israelis, Iraqis, North Koreans, etc... for the actions of theirs.

But I have no interest in arguing these points here. They are news photographs, and like anything photographed by man, there is no such thing as truly unbiased coverage. I'll grant that.

Well said...and point well taken.

Bias is in the eye of the beholder, editing belongs to the editor, censorship belongs to the prejudiced, and the critic belongs with the failing artist.
