Please point out which photos you're talking about, exactly, that supposedly show this anti-semitism.

One of the winning stories is a sympathetic portrayal of the eviction of Jewish settlers.
Edited: Sympathetic to the settlers I mean.

Sorry, after looking through the whole collection I don't understand your remark.
And if you mean the pictures concerning Israel, is reporting news or criticising a government a legal democratic right or do you think that the Israel government should be exempted from that? If yes, that would be the point I would start to fear for Israel's future.
Did you take a look at the pics from Yonathan Weitzman, Mohammed Ballas and the others or did you just look at the winner pic?
Just wondering

Ira if you're going to state anything, at least try to have one decent argument... Bland statements like that with no reasoning only make you look stupid.
Then again I can see it must be pretty hard to find any half-decent arguments for your accusations.

One of the standard pro-semitic works on the subject, "The Real Anti-Semitism in America" by the Perlmutters, strongly supported by the ADL and others, even argues that the danger of the new/real anti-semitism is grounded in politics, not cultural/religious differences. So this anti-semitism (sic), the Perlmutters say, is even more dangerous because it's directed against the state of Israel (edit: Israel's national policies, not Israel AS a state), not the Jewish people as a race or religion.
So, again: try supporting your statements (and allow me to have a good laugh).

I don't want to enter into these arguments, but I did want to make the following comment.
My son is 14 this year. I bought my first World Press Photo Yearbook the year after he was born. I have bought one ever since. After a few years it became something I am doing for him. When he reaches 21 I shall give him the full set. He will then have a pictorial record of current affairs for every year of his life.
Regards,
Bill

Why "sic"? That is precisely the point.

That is a good idea and I really hope that he will appreciate it and, being young, declare our generation as a generation of fools like I did with my grandparent's generation

In reply to "most have to do with the political actions of a country... not a religious or cultural statement", you replied: "Of course that's what they'd like you to believe".
And know you say the exact opposite: that anti-semitism is based on politics. A bit awkward, no?
At any rate it is NOT anti-semitism anyway if it's directed against Israel's politics instead of on ethnic, religious or racial grounds. Grab a dictionary, go to "anti-semitism" and see for yourself.

For those that are a bit older and/or did not get the chance to pick up every year's World Press Photo book: there is a very nice Phaidon book titled "Century" (I believe), a pictorial history of the 20th century.

What is Anti-Israelism? Being against Israel's foreign policies?
In that case: I confess! I am a true Anti-Israelist. So sue me. Am I against Israel as a state? No. Do I think all Israeli's are horrible people? No. Do I think Israel should be erased from the surface of the earth (dixit Ahmadinejad)? No.
But do I think their foreign policies are aggresive and downright illegal? Yes! Do I agree with their reasoning for starting the war this summer (the so-called "terroristic" kidnapping of an Israeli soldier)? No. Do I think it is right they occupy 50% of the autonomous land of the Palestinian Authority (the 50% figure is from the Israeli organisation B'Tselem)? No. And I can go on for a while.
In short I am absolutely disgusted by the Israeli foreign policy, the US support for it, the European indifference/incapability and the media's bias.
None of that makes me anti-semitic.

Vladimer I do agree with you about too much hope is closing our eyes, I just felt that the all the photos on the site showed too much sorrow (the dead child being held up to a barrage of cameras), although some sorrowful pics do also capture hope...there has to be a balance struck somewhere..

There are a lot of great photos there, even in the sports photos there are biased photos ... clearly the respective photographers were anti-Milwaukee Brewers and anti-French (Zidane headbutt) ...
Not that it makes any difference but topdog has been on my ignore list since about his 3 or 4th post, so all I see is when others quote him. Ignore is not a feature I use lightly.

I'm sorry, but I have to say something. I don't agree with the American War Machine. Does that make me Anti-American? I'm American, I think. If a government is behaving badly should we not criticize it?
I don't think disagreeing with Iraels actions is anti-semtic at all. The people ruled by any government are just pawns anyway, they have nothing to do with it. The thing is that because of the governments actions the people of any given government get the abuse of ignorant people. It's easier to pick on the little guy. That's where everything gets messed up. I'm American and I know there are countries that I would visit where I would be prejudged for what my country has done, but I myself didn't do anything.
I don't think good people would be so ignorant as to jump to conclusions about a race of people based on what their government is doing around the world. What it does do is give the ignorant affirmation of their beliefs.
Peace.

Disagreeing with American government policies does not make you anti-american. Disagreeing with Israeli government policies does not make you anti-Israeli. Being anti-israeli makes you anti-semitic. You know who you are.
