Worth it? 2012

If it's the size of a GSN we have a winner, alas Bessa cameras are thin on the ground here in NZ so I have never seen one. Actually lots of cameras are hard to find down here so I would be getting it from far far away.
The rangefinder framing thing is ok with me I can always crop if I need to but mainly I'll just get in close and wait for the right moment.
Of to read more stuff about the Epson like which lens i might get .... oh dear me.:D

i like a 40mm on the rd1...it fits the 35mm frame lines pretty well.
a 25 is nice on the rd1...i prefer it to a 28...

I'm thinking how far less istD and D70 with same sensor cost nowadays...Well, I realize those are one of many DSLR's and R-D1 is one from a few....but still.

they are completely different beasts...digial rangefinders are still somewhat unique.

I bit the bullet, the 850 price kept me up at night. Only a little vertical alignment fix and thats it!

Aahhh, the one on adorama? I've been looking at that same body for few weeks, especially after finding out how easy the vertical alignment is thanks to google.

lol thank God I snatched it before,
I woke up at 3 am, kind of sweaty wondering why I didnt buy it on the spot. If I passed that deal I would be full of regrets by now

I love using my Bessas and film, but I've got a great offer for an R-D1 on the table. Does anyone here switch between the two, or does the R-D1 take over once you've got one.

I'm looking for a reason not to buy!!

if you like the bessa you will like the rd1...same feel really though the rd1 is a bit heavier.
it's hard not to like the rd1...

the r-d1 is definitely bigger.

it really depends on whether you prefer film or whether you prefer digital.

for black and white i generally use film as it's just so easy to do.

but for color the r-d1 is a godsend, plus the files can be converted to black and white and look fantastic if you don't like how a particular photo looks in color.

to be honest i don't think the r-d1 has a real downside. it's a fantastic camera.

6mp is enough for me, my primary DSLR is a d70s which i use for its fast sync speed, that camera has served thousands of other photographers well for years!

I had an R-D1 for a while and I loved it. It was one of the most fun digital cameras I ever shot with, and the analogue controls were great. It really is just a fantastic design. I didn't love the shutter cocking lever (but it didn't really bother me) and the battery life (short), but other than that, it was near perfect. The M8 looked better and has the classic leica ui layout, but I preferred the files and handling of the R-D1 overall. Plus the Epson JPEG engine is really terrific.

I haven't read this thread in depth so maybe I'm just reiterating what has been said, but my answer to the OP question is: definitely.

The only reason I moved on from both the M8 and R-D1 is that I needed slightly more versatile cameras (like ones that could do time-lapse) and macro. Otherwise I'd be happy snapping with the R-D1 for a long time.
