Wotancraft Holster for Rangefinders!

Somewhere ... some poor sod is going to get shot while going for their camera around an edgy law enforcer who's had one too many coffees!

What a joke...not the holster concept but people thinking about pulling guns.:p Hell, everyday I wear a jacket or a coat, I have my M3 across my chest with the strap and shoot like that everyday.:rolleyes: No one has or will ever think I am drawing down on them like the wild west!

Nor do they react when I pull out my XA2 from my inside pocket. Or my wallet, checkbook, etc. Why should they? Too much TV and movies.

The problem with the leather holster above is that it is too hot in the summer here. It is not a good material to be against metal either. The holster itself will cause marks on a good camera and is not really going to protect the camera much but will certainly add a patina quite nicely if that is what one likes. And without a grip on the camera, I would think an M body would be slippery at times and drops would be frequent for me. JMO...:angel:

From first hand experience, the shape and size of the leather, as well as how tightly you wear the strap is enough to prevent the holster from dangling. I've tested it, I cant get it to dangle. And certainly every strap that I've worn dangles far more.

I have no concerns whatsoever about potential to fall out. It's very deep such that even if the thick leather became softer, there'd be no physical way for it to fall out unless I was upside down, and the strap prevents even that. I'd say it works even better for a smaller body like the x100 since I can remove it and replace it easier - one handed even.

You may be right about this. The surface that contacts your body is canvas though, but I imagine it will still sweat.

We'll see about marks. It doesn't have any room to move, so it might not have a problem. As someone mentioned, using a leicagoodies sling with this or a wrist strap would be enough to prevent drops and actually help with removing the camera.

Can't remember the details but there was a thread about camera metal coming into contact with leather over a period of time and the result wasn't good.

That is why I prefer all of my camera cases to have a lining on the inside. My M3 already has a verdigris goatskin cover so I don't think additional verdigris would be good.:p
 
I visited the Wotancraft store while in Taiwan a couple months ago. I must say, their craftsmanship is excellent, but the prices are a bit high for me.

I tried on the prototype to this piece and it did feel like it would securely hold a camera, but definitely not something I require.

I see they decided to not keep the soft interior lining..
 
I like the look of this case and having a comfortable way to carry a second camera (especially on a shoot-ha!) is useful. I also want to give a shout out to Gordy's wrist straps which are all over Wotancraft's website in the photos. I don't suppose it would fit the Ricoh GXR...though it does fit the X100.

Yeah. Pulling the MP out of its holster now has two completely different meanings for the photographer and the police. :D

No Keith, as a minority macho man I am seriously offended by you calling this strap macho! Why don't you just forget about using adjectives altogether and concentrate on nouns. That will make me feel better about my particular situation. Thank you!

Excellent review of the WWII Reporter. I have been looking at one of these for awhile - I am actually looking at the Hektor model, but I expect they are very similar capacity-wise.

There seems to be a concern about this case being mistaken for a shoulder holster and attracting unwanted heat, but because I do not live in the USA, I don't think this will be a problem for me. I typically walkabout with only one lens attached to my M9 - so a case that puts my camera at-the-ready like this seems ideal to me.

One question: you say that this is not compatible with the Thumbs Up CSEP. I have a Thumbs Up EP-1 on my M9, and I was wondering if it is also incompatible with this model. The EP-1 is the model that does NOT have the cold shoe on top. If the case is only too small in the height dimension, then it might work for me. If it also too tight depth wise then I am out of luck.
