Here's an interesting spin on photographing people on the street: Sites in the UK soliciting pix of unsuspecting Tube and train riders for posting and comment. Note that London Transport says everyplace on the Tube is public and passengers are fair game.
 
Well, this site seems to be about being positive about someone's looks...and could be considered flattering. However, what if someone made a photo of you on the train, posted to a site called tubeugly, and then people anonymously dissed your appearance on the internet? Sort of like... http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/ I'm not sure I could take that.

So long everybody is polite, no problem. By the way in Arles there were two exhibitions of Chris Marker both of photo taken on the tube. Short report on my blog, here.
I'ìm not sure if this could be possible today where i live !

Several thoughts spring to mind:
1) Freedom of speech is freedom of speech. You either have it or not. So many people are killed every year in order to protect it or gain it. Whenever I photograph I benefit from it. It would be utterly hypocritical if I were against just because the motif was me [note to tube photographers: wide angle recommended as I am quite fat].

2) I cannot fathom why I should bother about what other people think of me as long as they do not accuse me of a crime.

So as long as the camera used was a rangefinder I have no problem 😉
 
The legal protections offered to the act of taking and posting the picture differ from the protections offered to people commenting on the pix. That will vary from country to country. But, if someone libels me in a comment about a photo of me, it's still libel.

It would be interesting to take pictures of people on their morning commute, and then again in the evening.
 
In the subway here in NYC people have asked me if I'm taking photos... even though my hands were nowhere near my camera and the camera had a lens cap on. I take photos on the subway sometimes, but people are very aware and suspicious on the train I use every day.

This is not a rational response....but: Chris Marker is such a great and important artist, that rules that apply to him are not the same rules that apply to mere mortals.
 
In the UK we are constantly filmed and photographed without our knowledge, yet still, despite knowing this, people only seem to mind if it is made obvious to them.

However would I mind having my picture taken in order to be objectified and lusted over by women?


Well we can all dream. 😀

The degree to which we think we control our lives, and everything that comes in contact with our lives, is laughable. Being bothered by people talking about street pictures of you is just an indication that you think you control a *lot* more than you do, or should do.
