18MP is the minimum acceptable to me. Better performance at high ISO would be perfect, but I cannot sacrifice image size.
For marketing reasons, I don't expect Leica do that.

I would agree. Resolution-wise, around 16-18mp is my minimum. I personally find the high-ISO on the M9 to be plenty useful with LR3, and have no problem shooting ISO 1600 when required.

No, I would not buy it. It would also have to be improved in other ways. I want a digital home for my M lenses, but I want up to date technology for the money. That means more than high ISO performance.

Like 51 point auto-focus, weather sealing, convoluted menus, huge zoom lenses, etc?

The question is a bit obsolete since Lightroom3, which has brought a vast improvement in noise behaviour. The M9 gives very good 1600 nowadays in LR3 or CS5, good 2000 and usable 2500.
How about the M8 in CS5? Any improvement compared to Capture-One 4 (I have NR turned off up to 640, and Chromanance NR set to 75 for 1250 and 2500)?
I'm fine with C1-4 and CS2 otherwise, but if there's a real noise improvement with the M8 in CS5 I could upgrade.

At least one stop improvement in CS5 over previous Photoshop versions I find. LR3 should be the same. I use C1-5 as well, and that is about the same or slightly better than CS4, but not as good as CS5 in this respect. You could download a demo and see if it meets your expectations. The content aware healing brush is a godsend and justfies an upgrade alone.
